SB: Five Wolverines named All-American

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The All-American teams were announced today by the NFCA.

Kelly Christner and Sierra Romero were named First Team All-Americans, giving Michigan 19 First Team All-Americans in program history.

This was the second consecutive year that Romero was named a first teamer. She also finished as a finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award for the second consecutive year. Romero is now a three time All-American, counting the Second Team selection from her Freshman year.

Megan Betsa was named Second Team All-American, Sierra Lawrence and Haylie Wagner were both named Third Team All-Americans.

Michigan and LSU are the only two schools this year to have 5 All-Americans.

When you get the Cali Kids!!! I telling you there is so much Baseball and Softball talent in the Inland Empire area, these kids would jump at Michigan instead of community college. And yes these community college teams would wipe the floor w most BIG10 teams on a daily basis!

Also it should probably be noted somewhere that Florida pitcher Lauren Haeger took home USA Softball's National Player of the Year award, edging out Michigan finalist Sierra Romero. Florida/Haeger is on the other side of the bracket in OKC, so the only possible meeting is in the WCWS finals.

Romero was unanimously awarded the prestigious MGoBoard Chick That Knocks the Fuck Out of the Ball Award, however.

Hogwash. This should have been the second straight year Romero won it.

She has the chance next year to be the only 4-time All-American in Michigan history.

She's only the fourth Wolverine to be named First Team All-American twice. The last one was Jennie Ritter.

Romo was kinda a foregone conclusion here of course, but I'm really happy to see Christner get that 1st team nod as well.  It's a very well-deserved accolade after a major breakout season.  Her emergence has probably meant more to this team, in terms of taking us from being merely good to being elite, than any other single factor (Betsa's improvement would be the other element at that level).  Can't wait to watch her & Romo do battle at the WCWS, and next season as well (but first things first!)

With all the returning talent will this team be preseason #1 next year? I can't imagine another top team with fewer contributing seniors.
