An SAT analogy - Rams:Panthers as UM:PSU

Submitted by NittanyFan on October 16th, 2022 at 9:59 PM

As a PSU fan who posts here quasi-regularly I feel compelled to post some content.  I live in LA.  I just got back from the Rams game today —- it was an NFL game but it was more of a matchup of an NFL team versus an “NFL” team.  Carolina led at the half but the Rams win going away.

Reminded me of the Michigan game yesterday - all the way down to the halftime score line and Carolina/Penn State have their highlight of the day being a pick six.  I had a post here predicting a 7 point Michigan win on Saturday —- that wasn’t right.  One team on Saturday was very good and looked like a functioning machine - and the other team didn’t.

So it goes - good game from Michigan and good luck the rest of the way.  Perhaps my ham-handed analogy above will go further - 2022 Michigan can be like the 2021 Rams and win it all.   They certainly have a shot.

NittanyDude I really like you normally. One of the better posters who roots for a different school

However today I absolutely love you for how bad we beat your ass yesterday.

Thanks for your optimism. I believe we will win it all this year

As a lifelong Michigan fan who lives outside Charlotte and watched both games you opine about, the only reason to see a common theme in the outcome of both games is to fail to recognize the context of the Panthers situation. They were starting their practice squad qb against the Rams, the defending Super Bowl champions.

This was never going to work or be competitive. They didn't even let him throw downfield fearing either a sack or turnover would result.

The 5-0 Nittany Lions were coming off a bye week into Michigan. The 1-5 Panthers were coming off the worst week of their season, the firing of their head coach and apparent internal dissension over the change in coaching that extended to the firing of their defensive coordinator Phil Snow who was seemingly leading the only functioning unit of the team.

Carolina is a mess. They have certain promise if you think Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield are your future. They have perhaps the best player in fantasy football and offline betting in Christian McCaffery (whose brother was once a Michigan qb hopeful) whom they are now dangling as trade bait along with the disgruntled former Temple grad and Jet draft pick Robbie Anderson who played for the aforementioned Matt Rhule, who as it happens is a Penn State grad who was a volunteer assistant for their 1998 team.

By the way, Matt attended Penn State during Michigan's visit to State College in 1997 when they crushed the Lions, 34-8.

The Panthers led the Rams at halftime on a deflected pick six which is similar to what happened in Michigan's dismantling of Penn State. Michigan led PSU at half 16-14, the Panthers led the Rams 10-7 at halftime. The Panthers kicked a field goal on their opening scripted drive of the game. That was their only serious offensive threat the entire game.

Penn State didn't do anything seriously offensive on Saturday. But they did throw the ball better in limited circumstances than the Panthers who did not give up 418 rushing yards in their contest.

I respect that you are taking your lumps with honor and grace.   We've obviously been there.

In fact, the suffering of the RR and Hoke years makes me appreciate this so much more now that I can't take winning for granted.

Amen on the not taking the winning for granted. Too many sports fans come to their  fandom of their favorite sports teams during the team’s upswing in winning, and then cannot fathom or accept losing of any kind. I’ve seen so many OSU and bama fans pop up over the past decade and a half here in central Indiana that it’s almost comical. And it’s especially comical when their team loses to its rival by, say, 42-27.

I know I wouldn’t feel like posting on an opponent’s board after that opponent housed my team, but you make a regular practice of it, and we’re better off for it. Buckeye Chuck deserves a shout as well for this practice. You guys contribute something and that’s appreciated.

I am proud of myself of having to the right prediction that PSU would only score 17 points. But I was wrong about Michigan having them with 28 points. Regardless, I will use Saturday's score in picking lotto numbers.

I am looking forward to PSU redeeming itself when it upsets unbeaten O How I Hate State on Oct 29th in Happy Valley. It will make Michigan's win even more impressive.

I still can’t believe Penn State made Minnesota it’s night game and not OSU.

To me, that makes no sense. That game is the defining game of your home schedule, and playing at night in Happy Valley is practically worth seven points on its own.

I don’t know why you wouldn’t want every possible advantage in that game.
