Rumblings on Mlive about DC candidates

FWIW according to some Mlive posters these two are the top two DC candidates. Greg Robinson (ex Syracuse HC) Tyrone Nix (Ole Miss DC)

The Robinson news was probably lifted from Scout, since there was lengthy chatter about RR and Robinson talking at the coaches convention on there today. BTW, never rely on MLive posters for "inside info". I learned that when some clown went around swearing up and down that he had inside sources guaranteeing Pryor was coming to Michigan.

My lasting memory of Greg Robinson is the '05 Rose Bowl, a freshman Chad Henne moving the ball at will on the UT defense. IIRC Hart was held in check fairly well. Still, far from impressed in that game.

That was the Braylon Edwards, Steve Breston show. I remember that game well. Every now and then Lloyd would tease UofM fans with just how good the offense could be if he would loosen the reigns.

Is he a successful coordinator? -He coordinated some slightly above average defenses for the Broncos the two seasons they won the Super Bowl with Elway -He coordinated the Chiefs for three seasons in which the unit was roundly regarded the laughing stock of the league (remember when Indy didn't punt once in their playoff game? That was Robinson) -He coordinated a defense for a single season in Texas, that, numerically, was pretty good (in the 20's in total yards allowed). However, they only played two teams that ended the season in the Top 25 (Michigan and Oklahoma). I would call this "checkered".

Some clown was loudly asserting here last year that Marvin Lewis was the leading candidate. And that wasn't even the knowledge, who was assuring us that Sarkisian was going to be the coach. Cosign with other brian... a comment on MLive has all the weight of a phone number and girl's name scrawled above the urinal in your local bar.

Syracuse is freezing and in an area without a great local talent base to recruit. It's also a bit different being a coordinator vs. the head coach. I wouldn't put too much stock in the Syracuse debacle in terms of his DC ability, but I do think we should be concerned about his ability to recruit. His main experience is in the NFL. I think that there are probably better options.

Syracuse had gone to 12 bowls in 14 years before Robinson showed up, and had one losing season in that time. They are not a program with the history of Michigan, Alabama, or anything like that, but they had a rock-solid history of decent success - they were a perrenial bowl team. Robinson took over a 6-6 team that returned 18 starters and preceded to lose 11 games the following year. We all know first-hand that when a team transitions systems, it can be bumpy, but his high-water mark in 4 seasons was a four-win season. Syracuse used to routinely attract adequate talent (plenty of 3-stars with an occasional 4 star sprinkled in) - and compared to the rest of the Big East, which, on par, recruits significantly worse than the rest of the BCS conferences, their talent base was certainly competitive with the rest of the league. For much of Robinson's tenure, the level of recruiting was unchanged from what Pasqualoni had done - 50% 2-stars, 50% 3-stars, with one or two 4-stars sprinkled in. However, in the past year, it's fallen off a cliff. They don't have a single player rated over 2-stars committed, and some 2-stars actually turned down Syracuse offers to accepts offers from FCS schools. He's demonstrated no ability to recruit, and has a modest record of success.

My point was that there is a somewhat different skill set between being a DC and an HC. Because Robinson was a crappy head coach does not mean he would be a crappy DC. I agree that his ability to recruit looks non-existant. Do we have enough good recruiters or is that a requirement for the job. That's RR's call. Robinson would certainly not be my top choice as a DC. I really don't see Rod landing a "homerun" with whomever he hires though. I think it's going to be tough to attract someone we'd call a homerun when all of the assistants are already in place. I think more likely is someone he worked with in the past whose at a lower level program or a guy like Nix that's been a position coach.

Right, and his DC resume looks like: 2 moderately above average defenses in Denver 3 extremely poor defenses in Kansas City 1 good defense in Texas vs. a very soft schedule

in that Rose Bowl against Texas. Robinson's D didn't stop anyone on our team that day. Lloyd Carr inexplicably allowing the time to run down then trying to "ice" the chip shot FG was the only thing that stopped M from putting more points on the board. That still goes down as one of his most idiotic decisions in my book. Even if he preserved 40 seconds, with the way Breaston was bringing back every KO to mid-field, TX would've certainly pooched it or kkicked it OB. So you're giving Henne/Hart/Braylon 37 seconds to go 25-30 yards for a makeable GW FG. Okay, I'll take those odds.

Looking on the sunny side and in the thinking of Weis E. Coyote - One thing Robinson has going for him is that he was an NFL dc. Therefore maybe he can sell kids on that he knows what it takes to get to the league and show off those superbowl rings.

I have it on good authority that other names are being considered. Big names. Super awesome candidates that you can't even imagine if you tried a million years. The intrawebs provide rock solid proof: 1) Ron Zook. Ann Arbor Aviation Partners picked him up at University of Illinois - Willard at 11:08AM and delivered to Willow Run http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KYIP 2) Jim Tressel. Flight Options picked him up at the Ohio State University on Monday at 9:23 for a flight to Willow Run http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KYIP/arrivals?;offset=40;order=actu… 3 & 4.) Siegfried and Roy: The lads and two tiger cubs are IN ROUTE NOW to Willow Run from Vegas. SOMEONE SHOULD GO AND TAKE PHOTOS! http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KYIP (Man do I miss the coaching search. That was awesome.)
