RR Predicts Bowl Game ... well, sort of

Submitted by Jedelman11 on
In an article that ran in the sporting news yesterday RR said "If we're not in a bowl game, we're all going to be ticked." Not quite a "Guaran-Sheed" but a statement of his beliefs none-the-less http://www.sportingnews.com/college-football/article/2009-07-27/five-st… Other interesting things in the article: 1) Rich Rod "has a crush on [Deanrd] Robinson" 2) Apparently if we beat a big boy (ND, PSU, or OSU), Tackle better, and Fumble less, we're going to win more games. Elementary my dear Watson! Simply elementary ...

IMHE, it shouldn't be a question of being in a bowl game, it's "we'll be pissed if we aren't playing on New Year's Day." Of course they'll be pissed, who wouldn't be?

is one Bill Martin, since he's the one who has to field the apoplectic phone calls from the high muckety-mucks in the University and the high-rolling bigshot athletic dept donor crowd all clamoring for RR's head on a platter.

ruined the article's credibility before even starting to read it. Why is it that most of these guys look like freakin' nerds? I'm not saying they can never come up with a good analysis, but once I realize they've probably never played the game, my first reaction is not to care about one word they say. Or maybe they've played the game, the video version of it.

So you would read a Matt Millen article because he played before? I know that is an outlier type example but I think we hear plenty of guys who have played previously with most not offering any material of interest. Or you know sentences. I think the world is starting to realize that putting smart people in important places is more important than someone with experience for experience's sake. Look at the rockets GM. He bases alot of his analysis on stats and he never played. The rockets got killed when they hired him because he wasnt a "basketball guy". Meanwhile Isiah Thomas was a great player but terrible front office guy.

Nerd? Maybe it's time to leave the grade school lexicon behind. First of all, how do you know if he ever played? He could have left high school 15 years ago for all you know, and God forbid his body composition or visual acuity may have changed since then. Second of all, what does it even matter at all if he played? Some people are not blessed with the physical attributes or the health to play football but still nonetheless harbor an undying passion for the game. Please see the highlights of Bill Belicheck's playing career if you feel so obliged. His visual appearance should do nothing to his diminish the credibility of his writing, of which I'm sure he knows far more about the topic than your regular two-year high-school varsity player currently pumping septic tanks and re-living the "should-have's" of his now far-removed high school days on a fishing boat. Leave the guy alone man.

Another good of example of "Don't judge a book by its cover" is Mike Holmgren. Sure, he looks like a swollen walrus now, but i bet your didn't know he was the highest rated QB accoring to the AP in 1965 and won the equivalent of the "Gatorade player of the year" award, played QB for USC, and even had a cup of coffee in the NFL. For some reason this has always blown me away ... I guess being a QB is really all about the footwork Even though i hated his packers teams, i still think he is a genius of a coach and respect his football acumen.

The author also says the new defensive scheme will look like a 3-3-5... Wrong? This guy just seems like a douche.

for my previous post. I guess it came out as too judgmental. I should've spent more time than a 3 minute work break, and express my opinion better. I still think that the article was weak, in that he was stating the obvious. Not just Michigan, but every team can succeed if they find a solid QB, if they don't turn the ball over, if they gain confidence by beating a top dog, tackle well, etc. This guy comes up with a five-step plan that RR can take to fix Michigan?! Honestly, I've read similar but better expressed opinions on what we need to improve here on this board. But at least we are fans here, and as we get caught up in the heat of the moment we start expressing our ideas just to vent out a little. I doubt anybody here took the initiative to suggest things to RR with an article on SportingNews. From that point of view I thought his were just the usual TV fan observations. What's this guy's next project...give suggestions to Pete Carroll how not to lose a silly game each season? I wish him a successful writing career. I guess everybody has to start from scratch at some point.
