Ron English / Weird billboard sighting
As has already been pointed out, EMU's football program is, well, pretty much jack diddly poo. I would guess that as such, the AD at EMU and all parties involved with advertising the university and so forth would rather not call attention to the football program.
Nah.
I was headed south on the Southfield Freeway the other day on my way to Dearborn, and somewhere between I-96 and Warren, on the west side of the freeway, I see this giant EMU billboard with Ron English's face on it, with the message, "Welcome Coach Ron English" and then something about football. So, kinda cool for Ron, I guess, and if you're in the area, now you know where to see it.
But really, it's pretty odd to me. It was odd to me when CMU stuck Dan LeFevour up on a huge billboard behind Comerica Park, but at least CMU has been pretty successful for the past few years. Given EMU's football program, it's just plain bizarre.

I was heading east to Detroit for the Motor City Bowl, from Ann Arbor, and saw the same thing on I-94.

Bo would probably laugh if he saw Lloyd on a sign. Ron English, the messianic football hero of EMU! But EMU needs to go quietly in and out with a bang now. With the money at stake in College football you'll see more smaller schools taking the hard edge with advertisements. With the success of the small school in college football Athletic Directors are seeing green. LeFevour said he was embarrassed by the sign on Comerica but felt if it helped the school so be it and he was for it. It's weird to think DeAngelo Williams, who played at Memphis and was the Motor City Bowl MVP in 05 is a super stud for the Panthers. Then you realize he's sub 4.5 speed and the NCAA record holder for all purpose yards playing at Memphis. Your first reaction as a Michigan fan is his record is what it is because he did it at Memphis. And that may be, but he is rocking out in the NFL. Anyhow, maybe Ron will steal some inner city recruits away from RR or is aligning himself for a comeback. I think he wants back into the Big House anyhow. If he would win the MAC in three years and we slide Im sure hed be a candidate.

The only people shocked by DeAngelo Williams in the NFL are people who never took the time to actually watch him play.

Ron English gives Eastern name recognition they haven't had since... ? Who can really blame them for trying to get the word out and generate some awareness or excitement about their football team?

I understand that he plans to address EMU fans at halftime of their next basketball game, to tell them they'll be "very proud of our team Sept 4., 2010 in Ann Arbor..."
