As a stroke survivor and retired attorney, I wish Richard a steady recovery.  Science tells us the quicker a stroke survivor begins intensive rehab of their impaired functions, whether movement, speech, memory, cognition, etc., the more successful the outcomes.  Also, as depression is one of the most common conditions among stroke survivors, it is critical they take proactive precautions.  These include, among others, sharing feelings with family and friends, avoid isolating by joining stroke survivor groups in person or online, posssibly getting medical advice re low dosage anti-depressants.  The key piece of advice: use the impaired function (no matter how frustrating and difficult at first) or it will be lost due to lack of use; it just won’t return automatically after the stroke did its damage.

Best wishes to a good recovery for him. Adding to what SportsEditor said, hopefully he was immediately admitted to a stroke center for surgery.  Only 2% of hospitals have them and a return to functional independence decreases 11% for every hour without treatment.

https://www.cdc.gov/stroke/signs_symptoms.htm

What are the signs of stroke in men and women?

  • Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech.
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

The stroke treatments that work best are available only if the stroke is recognized and diagnosed within 3 hours of the first symptoms. Stroke patients may not be eligible for these if they don’t arrive at the hospital in time.

If you think someone may be having a stroke, act F.A.S.T. and do the following test:

F—Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A—Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S—Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T—Time: If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

Note the time when any symptoms first appear. This information helps health care providers determine the best treatment for each person.

Do not drive to the hospital or let someone else drive you. Call 9-1-1 for an ambulance so that medical personnel can begin life-saving treatment on the way to the emergency room.

Our business learned about Hoeg Law via mgoblog. He has done some excellent work for us in addition to being an all around good guy. Saddened to see this news and hope Richard gets well soon.

Went to law school with Rick. Our viewpoints were often 180-degrees apart, but I respected his thoughtful arguments and he's a good guy-- get well soon counselor!

I know Rick.  I used to work with him before he went out on his own.  He's a really nice guy and much younger than you would think when you here someone had a stroke (although I know there is no age test for strokes).  I'm shocked to hear this and certainly wish him the best.
