Question about Redshirting QB's in 2010

Submitted by uniqenam on
Quick question, I'm not really sure what all the rules for red-shirting are, but here goes: Is it possible that Denard Robinson redshirts next year? The reason I ask this is because we all know that DR's future should/could be at slot, WR, kick returns, or RB. Continuing to use DR as a QB, however necessary, is wasting an ungodly talent on the bench. So, first of all, is it possible within the rules for DR to redshirt next year? The situation where this could work out is: 1) DG enrolls early, is either tied with DR or surpasses him, becoming the #1 back-up. 2) Tate stays relatively healthy. The bonus to this situation is that you can always have Denard dress for games, and if Tate and DG both get hurt, you could just burn his red-shirt. Red-shirting DR gives us another year to develop QB's while giving him an extra year of eligibility to play as another position.

Theoretically, yes, you can redshirt at any point. The rest of this doesn't make much sense, if anyone redshirts next year, it will be the freshman DG, 5 start or not. Normal operating procedure for QBs is to stay on the sidelines and learn during years 1-2.

is DG redshirts next year, with Denard as backup QB/ splitting time with Tate. Then in 2011, Denard could RS and "learn" a new position and start in 2012 & 2013. That's a complete guess, but probably makes more sense than having DG backup Tate.

i'm with you. it seems like the last thing RR wants to do is have to teach a freshman the system again next year. DG might be able to come in as a situational player, but Tate will be the starter next year. From everything i have read about Tate, he's a super coached up film junkie and he still isn't running the full offense, DG doesn't have much of a chance to learn it all in the spring/fall. RR surely won't put his job in the freshman QB basket next year.

Vince Young and Pat White both redshirted. I see no reason why Gardner needs to play next year. Tate, when healthy, has been very good, and with an entire offseason to learn the system, Denard will be greatly improved. No need to waste a year of Gardner's eligibility.

Can RR just sit down with Les Miles in the offseason and ask him "So, what you've done with Russell Sheppard, can you show me how to do that with Denard?"

I can't see any situation that Denard redshirts unless he is injured for the season in the first couple of games. At all times this season, we are one Tate injury away from Denard being the starting QB. I can't see any situation next season where Rich Rod think he has a better football team with Denard not able to play. I also believe the coaching staff thinks that Denard is not as far behind Tate as some believe With Red-shirts, you do the best you can to keep them off the field, but sometimes, either their talent or the need to have them play overrides all situations "The past is history, the future is a mystery, the present is a gift we need to cherish"

...DG will be a great quarterback in a couple years; he will benefit from the Redshirt and further work on his mechanics at the University level. While much of his game appears *very* evolved DG will benefit from that preparation. (For sure, in an ideal world, both Tate and Denard would have had that available if we had any quarterbacks before they showed up...Notorious C.O.N.E. withstanding, of course. Denard has a year in the system and that can only benefit him in the coming years. Indeed, he may beat out Tate if his reads/mechanics improve. He certainly has the athleticism to make a position switch, if needed, without sitting a year. Nice post, interesting stuff.

you can redshirt your natural senior year if you want to. no way he does though. he'll be used in a variety of ways. hopefully as a combo slot/suberback/trick play specialist and return man.
