QB2 Jack Tuttle - a few highlights

I had the college football bug this morning so I checked out the Spring Game. One thing that stood out to me is that our QB2 and Indiana transfer, Jack Tuttle, looked particularly poised and experienced at the position.

I checked out some highlights from his play against Wisconsin when he was with Indiana, and he seems fairly elusive (poor man's Johnny Manziel), riding a defender by stiff-arming him to the sideline, and throws decent mid-range balls and endzone fades.

I keep hearing about how we need to bubble-wrap JJ to get him healthily along the path to Ohio State, and it's also a welcome relief that I think we'd at least stay dangerous if Tuttle ever needs to take the reins this season. He strikes me as an experienced game manager type who can extend plays the way Shea Patterson could.

I can't help but root for Jack Tuttle. Looks like transferring to Michigan and under the Harbaugh coaching staff will make him a better QB that he ever was at IU.

I completely agree, and I would also point out that Davis Warren is stylistically the most similar QB on the roster to JJ... sure, Davis might not have the raw ability or athleticism to the degree JJ has, but he's similar to the point where the offense could function without changing too much.

Opposed to Tuttle or Orji, where if they were to come in, the playcalling would have to be significantly altered to accommodate their strengths and weaknesses.

He looked confident but IMO he definitely has some shea patterson in him (that's not a compliment) and started dancing too much and making questionable decisions under pressure. To be fair to him, this is basing only off of a spring game where he probably only had a handful of practices, but I did think it was a little concerning.

I'm still partial to Davis Warren as QB2 for 2023, and if JJ doesn't come back next year, I think Orji is QB1 for 2024.

I was with the OP right up to the point that he compared him to Shea Patterson.  I thought I'd rinsed that bad taste out of my mouth...

Eh, I think Davis Warren is going to win the backup job. Limited sample size but he has always looked sharp when in games, has pretty decent physical tools and the leg up on familiarity with the offensive system. I thought the camp talk last year was that he honestly wasn't far behind the JJ and McNamara competition. But regardless a 5th year senior with actual playing experience is not a bad additional feather to have in the depth cap.

It's nice to have a lot of talent.  Including experienced talent.

This team appears to have loads of it and talented depth across most positions.  Certainly at RB and o line, and hopefully QB.  There also seems to be plenty of emerging but less experienced talent at dline, linebacker, TE and - hopefully WR.  We'll just have to see about CB.

Biggest questions seem to be about whether we have enough top end talent to hang with the recruiting/NIL factories in the highest pressure situations and enough creativity and openness within the offensive coaching staff to maximize our advantages.

The rest comes down to injuries (where our talent should help) and luck.  The team already proved last year that they could sustain an injury to a top player and beat a top 3 team on the road in one of the biggest/high pressure games of the year.

While there's always plenty to worry about, let's leave injury worries to the coaches.  And let's see what they do with the offense in the first few games of the year.

Okay, but that first highlight is really of the head linesman setting the Guinness record for the world's longest-ever stop-the-clock signal.
