RR uses the last recruiting weekend for potential walk-on visitors. Here's the list of visitors according to Rivals. This won't be the complete list but just preliminary:
Quintin Tucker, LB - San Diego (Calif.) Scripps Ranch
Chris Eddins, DT - Detroit Country Day
Mason Krysinski, PK - Utica (Mich.) Eisenhower
John Haarer, TE - Ann Arbor Huron
Kristian Mateus, OL - Forest Hills (Mich.) Central
Michael Hirsch, FB - Glenview (Ill.) Glenbrook South

But Eisenhower really isn't in Utica. It's Shelby Township. What's left of Utica that wasn't paved under M-59 is still a pit.

Anyone know anything about the FB Michael Hirsch? I know RR likes to get his FBs from the Walk-on crowd and a good sign is to see one visiting.

He doesn't have any D-I offers. Smart kid. 6'1", 225. Beat Kyle Prater's team in the playoffs.
He's white, so he's gritty and has stubby legs.

Does he also have good football instincts and smarts? As he's on offense, the ball-hawking skills he more than likely has are going unused. Thanks for the info by the way.

FB out of Novi Catholic Central.
He rushed for 1,279 yards and 24 touchdowns this year. Compared to Owen Schmitt.

Niko's about 6-2 245 lbs. right now. Should probably play at around 260-65. FYI.

Or they can keep him around 250 and get him fast. I get excited about walk-on fullbacks. That's a position where a walk-on can really contribute.

This may sound like a dumb question, but...
What does being a preferred walk-on actually entail? What are the actual differences between a walk-on and a preferred walk-on?

Preferred Walk-On is a kid the coaches have invited to walk on. They are probably just below the talent level needed to earn a scholarship.
A pure walk-on is a student who goes through a try out, ie Jordan Kovacs.

A preferred walkon is asked to enroll and join the team in workouts and practices (not just some high school player attempting to make the team). They will be on the team throughout the year (highly unlikely to be "cut" except for something like a disciplinary reason). Also, if a scholarship opens up, they have the expectation to receive at least a partial scholly.

No division 1 football team can give partial scholarships. Its all or nothing.

Crap. That's what I get for taking the "Coaching Football" class at University of South Dakota when they were D2... What about FCS /I-AA ?

FCS schools can give partial scholarships to their players. I believe they mentioned this during the Delaware State game because most of their players are on partial scholarship.

I'm actually in the Palmetto State now. Not far from "Clarence Beeks." I really liked my time in South Dakota, but I moved in 2006. My parents are still there, 90 minutes south of Sioux Falls, in Dakota Dunes. Home of Brandon Wegher, you may have heard of him... Where are you heading in SD?

We will be living on either the Rosebud or Pine Ridge Native American Reservations. She was accepted into teach for america and placed there. We are really excited about South Dakota, its a beautiful state.

I grew up in South Dakota, it is by far my favorite of the states I have lived in. It is pretty isolated compared to Cali but I would love to move back at some point. If you are into hunting and fishing there are a ton of opportunities very close to the Rosebud reservation. Pine Ridge is a little closer to the Badlands so there are also some good outdoors activities available there.

I believe that preferred walk-ons are guaranteed a spot on the roster, same as a scholarship player, the only difference being that they are not on scholarship.
Walk-ons have to show up for off-season tryouts and earn a spot.
