Perfect Defense?

Submitted by Bo Glue on

I'm not sure if it's a glitch, but S&P+ apparently believes we would cede 0 points to the average team in the FBS. Am I interpreting that correctly? Also Sparty slipped below Old Dominion in the rankings this week. For some reason I find that funny.

Team Rk Off. Rk Def. S&P+ Def. Rk ST Rk
Michigan 1 18 0.0 1 107
Ohio State 2 7 14.5 7 2
Wisconsin 13 72 13.7 6 12
Penn State 19 37 20.9 16 10
Nebraska 21 28 22.9 26 45
Colorado 24 27 24.4 34 70
Indiana 37 54 23.3 29 67
Western Michigan 45 21 29.7 71 82
Iowa 48 57 24.8 37 33
Maryland 54 59 24.4 33 84
Central Florida 64 102 23.1 28 43
Old Dominion 72 63 29.9 72 81
Michigan State 73 79 28.3 59 103
Illinois 78 88 29.4 67 61
Hawaii 100 49 39.2 119 30
Rutgers 116 127 29.6 69 100

EDIT

For context, the number one team last year was Alabama with 7.9. And the year before it was Ole Miss with 11.5. And the number two defense this year is Clemson with 11.2.

Also, they updated a bunch of the numbers since I posted this, most notably bumping that defensive number all the way up to 0.9. And here's a link to the ratings if you'd like to peruse them yourself.

Agree. I'm optimistic, but also have in the back of my mind that last year we shut out three teams in a row - 2 of them "ranked" opponents at the time - and then got blown open by Minnesota, Indiana, and OSU. I believe this D is really good, and probably better than last year, but withholding making "all time greatest" statements until the end of the year. That said, it's been damn fun to watch so far.

I'd also like to see how we do against a spread team - clearly our D can dominate pro-style offenses.  Do we play any other spread-type teams until we play the Sith?

Before Nov 26, and understanding that Iowa away and Indiana at home will both pose interesting challenges, M goes to EL on Oct 29. With nothing much left to play for but self-respect, this game will be Sparty's best effort of the season. It won't be enough of course but the final score might be closer than everyone thinks. Without doubt Coach Jim and company will take nothing for granted. Besides, there's that lingering memory of last year . .
