Well at least staee's stadium when they play psu will not look like this....
BTW, this is another excellent Long-Form story.
but Ford Field might?
FWIW - that picture IS from one of Penn State's visits to Spartan Stadium (their 2019 game).
Didn't you say the PSU @ MSU game (rivalry week) often lined up with your schedule such that you could attend? That's not you in the picture is it?
Not me. I didn't attend the 2019 game.
Just as well. The 2015, 2017 and 2021 PSU @ MSU games were in November. I attended them all, PSU lost them all. The 2019 game was in October, I couldn't get back. PSU won.
Net net: I need to stay away from Ford Field in 6 months.
Weather was crap thst game. Same day as us running over ND in the rain. Nobody going to stick around in a loss in that weather. Can probably find a similar pic of UM stadium in that loss to Utah.
Avoids flyover of empty spartan stadium. Big brain stuff from mel.
I can't figure out why they had to move the game, or if they just thought it was a good idea. It's a night game, but I doubt there are any other events happening at the trash heap.
In any event, I think this will move the Class A high school championship game to Sunday. I can never go to that because of The Game. So this works out.
It's Thanksgiving weekend and the team sucks. Spartan Stadium would literally be empty. I kind of get it from an AD standpoint.
As much as I love dunking on MSU, it does make sense. Same as Michigan being in the GLI. Not a ton of people on campus, but lots of people will be in the Detroit area who are willing to drive downtown.
East Lansing isn't that far from Metro Detroit, and the game's on a Saturday. It's hard for me to imagine that there is a large segment of the MSU fanbase that could attend this game in Detroit but not in East Lansing.
It strikes me as a publicity stunt. Maybe they think some neutral fans in Detroit will show up out of curiosity.
Regardless, to play Senior Day - your end-of-season rivalry game - at Ford Field is cringy.
They tried really hard to make it a rivalry but I just don’t think it ever stuck.
Its not on Saturday. it got moved to Black Friday night. Per the graphic.
Actually kind of cool, indoor game when your pretty much guaranteed nasty weather,
Will be a full house as season tix holders will be seated, what 55,000?
I am betting it has to do with the NBC/Peacock logos at the bottom of the screen.
Maybe it was yet another thing Kevin Warren promised without telling the schools, Ford Field nor anyone else involved in actually pulling the game off
I, for one, would much rather be in a dome for a night game at the end of November. Average low/high for that date in EL is approx 28F/41F respectively.
I'm sure that also has a lot to do with it, since the Big Ten apparently promised so many night games to NBC, much to Warde's surprise.
Pretty much everything is to Warde's surprise.
Wait, aren't they usually playing HS football championship games at Ford Field the day after Thanksgiving?
(EDIT: Never mind; it looks like they are moving HS championships to Saturday-Sunday instead of Friday-Saturday).
wait, what? sunday? the hell?
Yeah that surprised me too, but I guess the MHSAA got rid of their "no Sunday competition" rule at some point?
Any Christian school in a title game will have the option of playing Saturday. Sorry didn't save the link.
BTW, Coach MeLLLLLLLL will be coaching a high school team that day.
Hey now, don’t besmirch the MSHAA by comparing MSU to a high school!
Wow. Bet there will be pushback from some parochial schools re Sunday.
It's fitting that MSU plays on Friday and the high school championship games get moved to Saturday-Sunday. After all, the JV usually plays the night before the varsity.
hey-oh!!
A lot less trash will be swirling around.
As long as MSU doesn't leave their bad vibes behind and infect the Lions.
The Lions will already be 12-0 before this game, so they should have the division wrapped up.
Lions fan in May.
Wonder if Penn State will make it a white out game.
msu will make it a white out game and confuse everyone.
What better way to start off Thanksgiving weekend than to see sparty get embarrassed in a night game at Ford Field. I'm sure half the stadium will be PSU fans.
And the other half will be empty bleachers, or people who got lost on their way to Greektown.
Soft
Shorter drive for the PSU fans. Cool.
Isn't this the weekend MHSAA football championships are at Ford Field? Wtf
Moving from Friday/Saturday to Saturday/Sunday. Doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but I've never been involved in it.
For me personally it wouldn't be a big deal, but I've never seen any Sunday MHSAA events until this. Seems some religious schools may be upset about it?
Probably will be a big deal for fans of high school teams from up north and the UP who will have a long trip home Sunday night.
This will be good background entertainment as I get my layers ready and hydrate for the next morning/afternoon. I hope there is snow again this year.
Last year one of their entire upper decks was shut down for their last game and relocate all fans... Could you imagine having that much empty room!? Smart move...
Does this mean the Lions' curse will transfer to Penn State? I'm fine with that.
Hey hey now ........................... that's not funny!
-------------
How about this? Say what one will about Penn State, but they've at least won some division/league/National Championships over the years.
So maybe that can rub off in reverse on the Detroit Lions?!?!?!?
So I have to ask this.....why? What reason does MSU have to move their home game to a nearby but still neutral field? Is it financial and if so, how do they benefit?
I get why the networks and the B1G would want this - a prime time game indoors late in the season - but I'm at a loss as to why MSU would agree to it.
Any ideas? Seriously.....what's in it for them?
Benefit you ask? Better to get embarrassed at a neutral field than at home. Sparty on.
Not sure. Does state have to pay to use Ford Field? Does Ford Field just get the vending sales or do they also get a portion of the ticket sales? You have to think even a half full spartan stadium would be better financially for MSU.
The press release has more information
The game at Ford Field will be sold as a standalone contest, with details, including on-sale dates, to be announced in the near future. Season ticket holders and student season pass holders who have already paid for the 2023 ticket package will be refunded for tickets and parking to the previously scheduled game vs. Penn State at Spartan Stadium. There will be designated sections in the lower bowl for Michigan State students, with priority going to 2023 student season pass holders.
I'm baffled how that's financially advantageous for MSU. Curiously, it seems the Big Ten proposed this.
The Big Ten Conference approached Michigan State about the athletic department's willingness to consider moving the final game of the regular season to a national television window on Friday night, and the potential of moving the contest from Spartan Stadium to Ford Field.
The B1G asking for this to happen makes a lot of sense to me. MSU agreeing to it, unless there's a signficant financial gain for doing so, does not.
This is easily the 2nd biggest home game on their calendar this year, why they would want to give it up and move to a neutral field, albeit one relatively close to home, is a head-scratcher.
