MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia quarterback Pat White apologized Thursday for his comments that accused Mountaineer baseball coach Greg Van Zant of not pursuing black athletes.

White has been selected three times in baseball's amateur draft. He was asked Tuesday at the Big East football media day in Newport, R.I., whether he had spoken with Van Zant about the possibility of playing college baseball.

White said Van Zant "wasn't interested" in having him on the team and was "not too high" on black players. There were no blacks on the 2008 WVU baseball roster.

"Thinking back on my recent comments at Big East media day, I believe that I may have overstated my feelings on college baseball and the WVU baseball program," White said in a statement released by the university. "I have not played collegiate baseball in the past because I have concentrated on football and building on our success with my football family.

"I am sorry my comments have caused so many distractions. I am looking forward to putting this behind me and getting on the practice field with my teammates on Saturday."

Messages left Thursday evening with the WVU baseball office and the WVU President's Office of Social Justice weren't immediately returned"

It's awesome how this kid publicly slandered someone, and then says he's sorry, not for making completely baseless statements that may jeopardize this coaches career, but for the distraction.
And everyone's OK with that?
Are you freakin' kidding me ?
I have nothing against Pat White. He is a great player, and seemed like a pretty good guy. Until this.

I got gas on my way through this summer, I was stopped for maybe 2 minutes and during the 40 seconds I was by my car filling up a pick up managed to drive out of the gas station blaring some folksy song about the kkk lynching niggers, so it's not unreasonable that there might be some truth to what he's saying.

I have. Probably 20+ times. I go snowboarding there.

To say that someone you've never talked to is racist, just because you heard a racist song on the radio in the state that person is from is ludacris. Some of the most biggoted people I've ever met are from Pennsylvania and Ohio.

I guess that makes JoePa and Tressel Grand Wizards.

There may be merrit in what Pat White said, but it is, as yet, unproven.

How many racist songs do you hear on the radio (excluding rap)? Exactly. It was obviously a CD. It's not that ludicrous to assume a guy that bought or burned a CD with that crap on it just might be a tad prejudiced. If it actually was on the radio then that still says something about WV. Who would put that on the airways? That definitely has merit.

... for the spelling lesson.

Just because one person has a racist CD, burned or otherwise, does that mean the baseball coach is prejudiced? You could even go as far as saying "racism is prevalent in the area of the gas station", but was that gas station near Morgantown?

All I'm trying to say is that Pat White basically called this guy out on hearsay, and has yet to expound on his statement, only apologize for the distraction.

It's just like me saying Obama is a racist, because I heard somone say it. Only I'm not a frighteningly quick QB in the Big East.

Apparently my spelling skills are impeccable but my comprehension skills lack in several categories. For some reason I thought you were defending the guy in the truck with the backwoods music. After slowly sounding out each word of your reply to mmm I now understand that you stayed on point and were merely saying that just because one dumb ass listens to KKK shit doesn't mean the WVU baseball coach is a cross burner. Was it really that hard?

Love the avatar. You'd think they could have photoshopped the hair off her chest, though. Damn.

I don't doubt that there are more racist areas, I'm just suggesting that it's entirely plausable that the coach is hardcore racist, and if that's true then White would probably know that.

Ohio is a trashhole.

I'm not going to pass judgment on Pat White because of this exchange in the media. He has his beliefs and they may be based in truth. I don't know. (And frankly, I'm not too excited about WVU baseball.) If I was interested in getting to the core of this, I would do two different analyses. First, I would look at the historical rosters of WVU under Van Zant and compare those rosters to other baseball teams in the Big East. In order to eliminate regional differences between say WV and South Florida, I would determine the average racial mix of some assortment of other racially mixed teams on each campus (this assumes that each ca, and determine how the WVU baseball team racial compositions (relative to other WVU teams) compare to the other league baseball teams (relative to other Big East teams). Second, I'd look to see how the racial composition of the WVU team changed when Van Zant took over the program.

The racism angle is what brought me into this story, but it was quickly overshadowed by what appears to be the massive fundamental incompetency this guy displays as coach. I'm fascinated, and will be following WVU baseball this spring to see if the allegations of atrociously stupid managing are true.

Pat White delivered a smooth non-apology apology. He's not sorry he said it, he's sorry he said it when and how he did. Kid'll go far in his dealings with the media.
