OT:What Is Your Age Limit For Wearing Replica Jerseys
While I was enjoying Verlander's gem at Comerica last night my wife commented that there is no age limit for Jersey's these days. Back in my day (old timey voice) replica's were worn by children although they were tougher to find. The opines also seem to fall harder on men than women maybe it's a transition to your girlfriend wearing your lettermen jacket in high school, who knows. But the question needs to be asked, how old is too old to wear a Replica Jersey? Is it more acceptable/main stream now?
EDIT: Authentic or Replica's apply, anything that reflects what is on the field.
If you can't answer...
Costume when you watch batman?
Not analogous.
I am, but that doesn't mean I have to wear a Batman costume. If people dress up at the premier of The Dark Knight Rises, however, I would respect them.
Agree to disagree.

I'm embarrassed for all of you. I hope that fans of others teams don't view this thread and see how insecure you are in your fandom.
You're asking a question of taste, so there's by definition no real answer. My tastes:
College Football: Is all about tradition. By about 28-29 you should have established your "Game Day" traditional wear. It should match the primary color of your team, and be able to withstand years of punishment because it will be worn 7-8 times per year for the rest of your life. This is why the 'maize out' concept has been so hard to push through -- you're going against millions bajillions of years of blue sweatshirts worn down to the perfect level of comfort and which still smell like hot dogs from 1976. DO NOT LET YOUR SPOUSE WEAR YOUR GAME DAY GEAR IT IS SACRED. (My system was thrown out of whack by maize craze, but I'm starting to get into a tradition again using MGoShirts as overtees).
NFL: Is the opposite of college football unless you actually live in one of those NFL cities where the NFL team is basically the college football scene. To this I recommend any jersey of a current player, or else a player everybody liked from a down period because that shows you have fan loyalty (like if you show up to a Lions game in a Corey Scheleschinger jersey, mad respect). In general NFL is about NOW so if you're going to jersey it be ready to throw out your Harrington to buy a Roy Williams, then toss that for a Suh, etc. (I have a Suh jersey. My brother just got Fairley. This will work for us for a long time I hope).
NHL: Sweaters are easier. They have a lot of the same rules as MLB, especially with the "favorite player as a kid" thing. You get more props the more underappreciated your guy is. Hockey however there's less disparity between the stars and the rest of the top lines/pairings so you need your own reason to pick a sweater. NHL is also the best place to get creative. Ones I give props for:
- There's one couple who come to every game in a different pair. They have Zetterberg&Datsyuk, Kocur&Probert, and Fetisov&Murphy.
- Верьте - 16 ("Believe" - Konstantinov)
- Aurie 6 (yeah, f the man!)
- 9 (don't ever put a name on an pre-names guy's sweater by the way. Except Aurie because obviously.)
- The guy with the 20 sweater that used to be LaPointe but has that crossed out and Robitaille written in, and that crossed out and Lang and that crossed out and Downey written in, and that crossed out and then there's a line over to the side where he made more room and wrote "Miller" and at the bottom in red sharpie it says "and Mickey, always Mickey"
MLB: This is where jerseys get a bit difficult. There are plenty of games so you can rock more than one jersey and still end up wearing it 20 times a year. In baseball there will always be a No. 1 jersey for you, and that is your favorite player as a kid. Ask any man who grew up in America and he will answer that faster than he can tell you his kids' names. You want this jersey in the style that was worn during that guy's height, so for example for me I've been after an away block-letter '80s Trammell jersey forever.
If you're going for a current player, you want someone whose most memorable moments came as a Tiger, and also you want a jersey that will fit you kind of the same way as it fits that player, because the illusion is that you're wearing that guy's jersey. Women don't have to follow that rule. But 400-pound guy in an A-Rod jersey I saw at a Yankees game: this rule is specifically for you. If you go to the park a lot, I recommend a second jersey of a guy that nobody would remember until they saw your jersey. Like the other day we saw a guy in a Pat Sheridan jersey. Holy shit Pat Sheridan! That's awesome. I used to do this with a Brookens jersey but of course the Tigers went and made Tommy Moustaches one of their coaches so now everybody remembers Tom Brookens again.
Inge is cool only if you live east of Woodward Ave. Avila is the hot new one. If you were one of those dupes who bought a Chris Shelton jersey in early 2006: HAHA, at least you didn't get a Carlos Pena. Seriously though how many of those Shelton jerseys are still on the rack even today? I bet the finance guys at Dunhams had a meeting to look at ROI in FY2006 and pointed to a big chunk of losses and said "Shelton jerseys," and that these have been a drag on profitability tracking like RichRod attrition to Michigan's APR.
Also don't wear a Yankees jersey until that guy's number is actually retired. Baseball history is cool. Being a Jeter or Posada fan makes you an asshole. I'm not just Yankee-baiting here, srsly. If you can afford to go to enough Yankees games to warrant buying a jersey without it seriously damaging your credit score, you should probably be in a designer suit, not "slumming it" with the hoi polloi. If you did give a significant % of your cash to get in the ballpark, it is appropriate to wear one of those "name" t-shirts. The reason there are different rules for Yankees is because it is literally impossible for you to be old enough to buy a jersey yet not have lived through a Yankees championship. So whereas a Cubs fan can put on his Cubs jersey and you know that guy is going to stick it out with his Cubs come hell or Steve Bartman, you have no idea if you'd still love the Yankees if they flat-out sucked for a decade and went thorugh years of futility, etc. Every other fanbase has been through that, and can wear their jerseys as a sign of loyalty; a Yankees jersey just says you're a fan of winning. And fascism. And that you're an asshole. Granderson jerseys are the exception, because he gives all of his share of those proceeds to charity.
Also, wear away when you're attending your team's away games. This is just a courtesy because our home jerseys all look kind of similar and it sucks to jump up and cheer a Boesch home run and try to high-five the guy next to you and then you realize his jersey says Twins on it. You can wear your jersey to a game your team isn't playing in, but again wear your white if you're rooting for home and your gray if you're rooting for the away team.
TLDR--Sparksnotes plz?
well-reasoned and well-written.
This is why the 'maize out' concept has been so hard to push through -- you're going against millions bajillions of years of blue sweatshirts worn down to the perfect level of comfort and which still smell like hot dogs from 1976.
Very true. I completely understand why they chose maize; it's more visually striking than blue. And I have accepted it and worn maize shirts. But I miss wearing my jersey to home games. I bought it the summer before my freshman year and it's still in reasonably good shape. I do wear it while watching road games on TV, but it's not quite the same.
And yes - the Tigers will not be the Tigers until they go back to the road uniforms with "DETROIT" on them, instead of that Cleveland-esque cursive they're trying to pull off.
The "Cleveland-esque cursive" uniform that has been worn by the team since 1994 was also used by the Tigers from 1930-1959. It worn by some of the greatest players in not only Tigers history, but in the entire history of baseball -- players such as Hank Greenberg and Charlie Gehringer.
As a point of reference or comparison, the script Indians logo did not appear until 1946, sixteen seasons after the Tigers first began using cursive on their uniform. Used for only eleven season, the script Indians logo was put on the shelf after the 1957 season and did not reappear again until 1994, the same year the Tigers reintroduced their script logo.
Given that information, I suppose one could make the case that Cleveland is actually trying to pull of a "Detroit-esque cursive" as opposed to the other way around.
And it's probably what Ilitch grew up watching, so he's attached to it like I am to the block letters. I do think the block letters are more unique, though.
They're both outlining old script uniforms. The late '60s and early '70s teams had block blue letters on a gray uniforms and the blocks we grew up with were just putting orange and white outlines around that.
Between all the away uniforms, I like our current ones best. But when it comes to a Trammell jersey give me what he wore in '87 because that was when I fell down the well.
I had a lot of fun last year modding MLB 2k10 and making Tigers uniforms (and then blogging about them).

In '94 we actually did change our uniforms to look more like Cleveland:
I'm 32, and every game day I'll wear my jersey (#37, I presume Irons because that's who wore it when I was in school and purchased it), and my dog Maizey Blue wears hers (see pic). We may also rock the jerseys for a big basketball or hockey game, and I'll wear mine if I'm playing flag football, but that's about it.
I think any age young or old. Supporting your team in any way is a plus. Lets face it !!! Prices on everthing are going up these days! Nothing is cheap anymore! I love watching Grandpa's and Grandma's sporting the jersey's Lol WAY COOL :)
At a game (or possibly at a bar to watch a game), the age limit is 1,000. Wearing a jersey at any other time not related to a game, the age limit is 1 day old.
Totally and completely disagree. You are saying if a twelve year old kid gets his favorite players jersey for christmas he can't wear it to school the first day back and any day it is clean after that? I can understand the arguement that as one gets older it is less appealing to do so (I don't agree but can understand) but who are you to pass judgement on a kids exuberance?
My guess is that many of them just say what the poster does, and hold that to be the appropriate standard.
Not a good look otherwise, as many others mentioned.
Hockey: No maximum*
Football: 24*
Baseball: 12
Basketball: 12
*As long as you're at the game; otherwise: 12.
And in the privacy of your own home -- knock yerself out
A little kid walking around the airport with pilot wings on is cute. A grown man, other than a pilot, walking around the airport with pilot wings on is creepy.
Yes, but is anyone at the airport not rooting for the pilots?
Whenever I feel like switching up my gameday wear is when I don't wear it.
I only wear jerseys for games. I have a Maize Hockey jersey in a box under my bed until the season starts up in October. As with football. I have a Home and Road Authentic #2 adidas jersey for football and plan on getting the Legacy Jersey. For the lesser games this season against smaller schools I'll be rocking the new sideline polo and my player warmup pants.
There really is no age limit to me as long as you support the team and represent them in a positive way.
This is not fair, but on some precognitive level I think dudes walking around in jerseys (and they always fit horribly, and such guys almost always have poor-fitting jeans and sneakers that are not age-appropriate) look like meatheads. As I said, not saying it's fair, but it's kind of my impression.
I think your assessment is fair.
But even if it's not, I don't think fairness is an issue.
Why would anyone care if people wear jerseys or not? I see people every day walking around in ratty t-shirts and shorts. Is a jersey somehow worse than that?
Personally I only wear jerseys on gameday. But, for example, during the playoffs I have no problem wearing a Wings jersey. I even would wear it to work when I lived out of state. Same thing with Michigan jerseys, though I usually had to wear those on Friday unless I was working on Saturday.
I've never understood people being so uptight about what other people are wearing.
Yes, 12. Wearing a jersey after that is one step away from attending Star Trek Conventions.
I wear mine to mass at ST Augustines every Sunday.
MY RULE IS THAT UNLESS YOU'RE ON THE BASEBALL TEAM, YOU CAN'T WEAR A FITTED HAT!
sound retarded? so do all of the "rules" in this thread.
hockey sweaters are no doubt way cooler than other jerseys, but i still think you can only get away with wearing em on a game day
