OTish Niumatalolo to stay at Navy

Submitted by Michigan Eaglet on

Per ESPN, Ken Niumatalolo has decided to stay at Navy as their head coach instead of going to BYU. This is relevant as Lance Anderson is now likely considered the front runner for the position.

Edit: And now it looks like Anderson is staying at Stanford. The DCC search continues.

"Kalani Sitake 'is prepared, and expected' to coach BYU if Ken Niumatalolo stays at Navy, per report. A new report seems to give some clarity in the BYU coaching pecking order"

The tweet people are referring to has him saying that he's basically only leaving for a HC job, which is still available at BYU.  I guess him going to BYU is just as good for our prospects getting Long Jr.

My intuition tells me this must have been BYU cooling on him, as discussed. He's already a legend at USNA: 8-straight vs. USAMA and a top-20 ranking this year. Perfect time to bow out, and nobody would blame him.

Wish him continued success. It will be interesting to see how much Navy misses Reynolds next year. 2015 was "damn the torpedoes." Next season may be "brace for heavy seas."

I really see the pendulum swinging toward Army in that series for the near future (pun intended -- WR Edgar Poe).

I'll see myself out...

right after the army-navy game, you had to think it was because in his mind he was thinking how great the game and tradition was/were, and that he was heart-broken at the thought that it was the last time he would ever be coaching in that game.

Kalani Sitake was the Utah DC when they beat us in the Big House in 2014.  He called a great game and it was obvious their defense was well coached.  M's poor special team play was a big part, but the Utah D was tough.  The other time we faced him was this year against Oregon State, a much lower level of defensive talent.

If he gets the BYU job, Anderson stays at Stanford, which would make recruiting David Long more difficult.

Thought he would use the upward trend of Navy football over the past 3-4 seasons to propel him to Provo.  34 seniors graduate Navy this year, including 10 offensive starters and the program's best player since Staubach.  Navy will be struggling to make a bowl next season.  But, Ken N did recruit and develop Reynolds, so we'll see.
