OT: Yogi Berra Dead at 90

Submitted by Everyone Murders on

"The lousy teams are good this year."

I've always suspected that Yogi Berra's "unintentional" aphorisms betrayed an incredible wit.  And his cultural status distracted folks from awareness of what a wonderful catcher he was.

We'll miss you, Yogi.  The future ain't what it used to be.

Great player and seems like a good guy, but I'm amazed by anyone who doesn't get that his "sayings" were nothing but a put on.

My two favorite Yogi-isms:

While out in public, someone once complimented his "cool-looking suit." He responded with, "Thanks! You don't look so hot yourself."

On his Yogi-isms: "I never said half the things I said!"

Took my youngest son to Yankee Stadium for his first big league game to watch the Montreal Expos. I had no idea it was also "Yogi Berra Day". Don Larsen threw out the "first pitch" to Yogi.

Then David Cone went out and pitched a perfect game. Great day !

There are some people who, if they don't already know, you can't tell 'em.

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.

In the Historical Abstract, Bill James ranked him first among catchers in career value.  Bench and Campanella ranked ahead in peak value but Bench didn't have his consistency (alternated good and bad hitting years through his career, suffered from injuries) and Campanella didn't have his longevity.

On his top-100 list of all players (including the Negro Leagues) he was #41.

was in the top 2 of all time catchers, Johnny Bench , the other. Ted Williams , who knew a bit about hitting,, said he worried more about Yogi than the other Yankees like Joe D and Mickey Mantle. No one had a bad thing to say about Yogi RIP , Mr Berra.
