OT: What is your preferred option for t.v providers?

Submitted by Big_H on

Good Afternoon MgoBoard,

I have recently moved into a new home and I'm trying to tackle what my best option is for my television provider. I figured coming to you guys would be a lot easier than seaching the internet for hours to get opinions.

So what do you recommend? Comcast, Dish Network, Direct T.V, some sort of streaming to watch t.v and sports? Please share with me what you have found to be most cost effective and reliable.

Some things I need to watch football in the Fall: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, NFL Network, Big Ten Network (I live in Michigan, so I'm in the BIG Network footprint), Fox Sports Network 1. These usually get me all the games I need to see and would like to be able to always watch them.

If anyone has any experience with some of the online streaming I would love to hear about that. I don't have any experience at all with a lot of the online stuff, except for netflix. I know there are options out there though.

I have always had Dish Network and pay over $100 for a 4 bedroom hook-up, I will probably go this route unless someone here can show me something better to go with.

So, please help me out fellow bloggers. All input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Go Blue!!

NFL Sunday ticket.

I had Dish for two years in the 90's, then two years in the late 2000's when the DirecTV receivers/DVRs were consistently flaky.   Otherwise, I've been with DirecTV.   I'll be with them until I can 100% cut the cord with reliable streamed Michigan sports.

I switched from Comcast to ATT for TV and internet. Both are great and you get the discount for 2 years. Internet is fast and reliable. With Comcast I paid for 50 mbps and rarely got 10, with ATT I am consistenly in the upper 20's. For cable they have all the sport networks, signal has never gone out. Guide is fast. Picutre quality very good. You actually pay less if you add phone. I never use it but signed up for the discount.

I use a Roku Box. I cut the chord. I'm done paying an arm and a leg to these greedy cable companies. But I do get ESPN (I use a relatives cable provider login info). I don't get the B1G Network though because they don't have a Roku app, however, I go to the B1G website and hook my MAC up to my TV to watch LIVE games. Seems like a lot but I don't miss cable at all.

Direct TV is all right, as long as you don't mind paying a small fortune, or a large one. Never had any problems with it, except feeling like I might've bought a second car with the money I saved not going with Direct. Well, they pretty routinely overcharge you as well, because you can't threaten to quit due to the crazy early cancellation fee, so you gotta keep after them every time they do it "on accident." Yeah, fuck Direct TV. I'm pulling the plug when my contract is up.

Don't tell the wife...she switched us from Charter to ATT Uverse and I was livid.  Now, about a year later, with close to $40 a month savings and, actually, better wi-fi AND remote boxes, i'm secretly in heaven!!  But, again, shhhhh, she thinks she's winning.

Comcast - strictly for internet (will replace when I can find a stable, cheaper broadband supplier)...really dislike Comcast

Digital Antenna - over the air local stations (all in beautiful HD and dolby 5.1!) the quality is better than cable!

Buying a Roku box - streaming various entertaiment channels

SlingTV - will be buying a subscription @ $20/month to get ESPN

I recently cut the cord with Comcast and bought two Roku boxes. I'm MUCH happier with them. With that said, sports content is still limited, and I expect that I will have to get a comcast box for a few months during football season for a couple years until more sports content becomes available on streaming services.
