OT - USMNT v Mexico in Columbus

Submitted by alum96 on

There will be soccer played tonight in the heartland of Ohio.  A very desperate Mexico team, sporting 8 points in qualifying will come play the good guys.  What was once unfathomable - a Mexico squad not qualifying for the World Cup - is now on the table, as Costa Rica, US, and Honduras are ahead of the team, with Panama only 1 point behind.  Mexico will be desperate and the U.S. will be lacking it's best player, Mr. Bradley. The atmosphere should be electric...positively "Seattle-like".  If only they had let me win the lottery for tickets - not that I am bitter.... (ok I'm bitter).

Do you speak Kiwi Mexico?  Wow. Just wow.  I don't know much about New Zealand's squad but if Mexico shows up with this group of peeps they have a great chance of staying home.

...New Zealand isn't a gimme. They played two friendlies against CONCACAF sides in Texas last year to prepare for the playoff and they were competitive:drawing El Salvador 2-2 and beating Honduras 1-0. They don't have the talent level of Mexico of course but they aren't any worse than some of  the teams Mexico's not beating now.

And that's assuming they get that far--there's the small matter of holdng at least a draw against Panama, who beat them twice in the Gold Cup.

So Panama is level with Mexico on points and goal differential. There is a real possibility that Mexico might not even make the 4th-place playoff vs. New Zealand.
