OT: US Open Day 4

Submitted by VCavman24 on June 16th, 2019 at 4:44 PM

Day 4 of the US Open has already begun, though the leaders haven't teed off yet (5:30 Eastern).  Will Gary Woodland be able to hold on to a 1-stroke lead, or will Justin Rose win his second US Open?  Or will someone else be holding up the trophy when all is said and done at Pebble Beach?

Also of note, Norwegian amateur Viktor Hovland (who is the current US Amateur champion) is trying to become the first low amateur at the Masters and US Open in the same year since Matt Kuchar in 1998.  Is at -4 currently.

Also of note is that he speaks English with a southern drawl.  He plays for Oklahoma State.

I like Brooks because on PMT he basically be said golf is boring and he only plays because he happens to be amazing at it. Hilarious to see the best golfer in the world right now not like golf hahaha

Some good golf being played so far. I'd like to see Woodland win, but I'd more like to see 3-4 guys tied going into the final few holes. And don't sleep on King Louie, pretty underrated considering what he's accomplished.

Woodland has been steady. Koepka made a huge charge in the first five holes Woodland took it in stride, made a couple birdies of his own and recovered from a couple bad shots (tee shots on 6 & 7)

I would also like to see Woodland win, but I feel like this is one of those days where Rose grinds one out.  If Schauffele can post -10 that would make for a very interesting finish.

Woodland is playing phenomenal right now. I wouldn’t mind him winning it. Koepka is such a beast, but he’s made some mistakes the last couple holes. Gonna be a great last 6-7 holes.

Guess we had to wait til the back 9 of the final round for it to feel like a typical US Open. Although it has less to do with the course and more to do with the players just botching it off the tee (or approach shots in Rose’ case)

Good for Gary Woodland!  Well earned first major!!  Brooks is still a beast and the man to beat.  Tiger....meow (unless it's the Masters).  Great tourney at Pebble.

Congrats to Woodland, but I was totally tracking Koepka.  He's not on a Tiger-like run, he's on a Jack-like run.  The last 5 majors alone I think he's been 1, 1, 2, 1, 2.

His game doesn't appear to have flaws (i.e., Spieth), and his mental game is strong (except the mid-back 9 at Bethpage).  Another 2 years of this and we'll be talking about him chasing down Jack.

I think the thing to realize is that today's game is ultra competitive - it's a lot harder to win a tournament than in Jack's day or even with Tiger's run 15 to 20 years ago. And I'm a huge Nicklaus fan going back to the 60s. It's no longer just an American-European game but an International one. The quality of the young players from all around the globe - in their 20s and early 30s - is staggering.  Anyone of 20 to 30 players can win a big tournament. I really believe that the records that Jack and Tiger set and will set will never be broken. Just can't dominate like they did because of the massive amount of world-wide talent in today's game.

Everybody talks about Jack's 18 majors  - and Tiger's 15 now - but what is really mind-boggling is Jack's 19 second place finishes and - I believe - 7 third place finishes. That's just TOTAL domination which he couldn't come close to matching in today's field. And keep in mind, I've been a huge Nicklaus fan for decades.

First, if Brooks does this for another 2 years (wins 4-6 majors) he'll be at 8-10 at 31.  That's deserving of eyeing the next 5-6 years after.

Second, I don't think it's harder to win now than in Jack's day.  Jack had more superstars to deal with - Palmer, Player, Trevino, Watson, Ballesteros - as well as great players that may not have the major cred - Weiskopf, Miller, etc..  Tiger had old Ernie and Phil.  It's hard to discern how much of his run was him vs. his era, but he certainly is/was great.  Today's game has more balance, more like Jack's era, but not necessarily as good as Jack's (yet).  Obviously, we'll know more in 5 years when the dust settles a little more on this era.

Third, great point!  Nobody talks about Jack's 19 2nds.  That's why Brooks has my attention now - not just the 1sts, but also the 2nds.  He's been at the top of the pile for 2 years now.  That's why I'm curious to see if he can do it for another couple years.

Also, I can comfortably admit that a Buckeye is the GOAT in golf.

Great performance by Woodland. Attacked like a champion throughout the back nine. Expressed confidence yesterday, followed up on it. No choke here.

I really enjoyed the Fox coverage compared to CBS. It seemed more real. Every time CBS flips to a recorded shot, you know it's going in. On Fox, it was hit and miss which is more realistic. Joe Buck is a POS but he wasn't on there much
