OT - Torii Hunter Jr. leaves ND and Richard Sherman hates TNF

Torii Hunter Jr. is not pursuing a 5th season with Notre Dame and will join the Los Angels of Anaheim.  The Angels selected Tori Hunter Jr. in the 23rd round of the MLB Draft.

Richard Sherman hates Thursday Night Football.  In his "Tuesdays with Richard on Thursdays" series, which actually came out on Wednesday this week, he writes about TNF.

I like Richard Sherman.  And I find his opinions to be spot on.

The only way TNF should continue is if the teams get bye weeks before hand.

with both Monday and Thursday night football(aside from the strain on players) is that 3/4 of the teams in the NFL are terrible and seriously painful to watch.  The only reason Sunday is still going strong is because of the variety of games you can watch and the "surfing" factor if you have Red Zone.  Picking two teams from a hat in the NFL and having them play a stand alone regular season game.... blah.  You may get the Patriots and Chiefs one out ten, both more often than not you are getting to pull out like Saints v. Bears and that is just eye pain right there.

I don't believe the quality of the teams is the problem.  I mean we appreciate MACTION around here and it's not because of the quality of the teams.  There are many things wrong with Thursday night football.  The quality of the NFL product (except officiating) isn't really the issue.

While I agree with Sherman that they need to reevaluate the way they do TNF, it's not going anywhere. Yesterday, Schefter said that TNF provides the NFL with approximately $1B in revenue and the players get about half that. I don't think the players want to give up $500M in potential salary, but there's got to be a way to put a better product on the field each week.

As for Hunter, good for him. I don't think coming back to ND would have been in his best interests. He's had problems staying healthy and the situation in south bend seems to be on the decline.

I tend to agree with Sherman, and yeah, more often than not the lineup on TNF is just awful. But the NFL makes money off of it so they're going to keep doing it. That's just the way it is. Its not right, and it is hypocritical, but they'd better get used to it.

I know Sherman says he isn't complaining about his situation. Maybe he really isn't. Maybe he is. But for those players who are, I don't feel bad for them.

You know damn well what you're signing up for when you play football. You're making the kind of money that 99% of Americans would kill to make. Even if you're a backup or third stringer. Injuries come with the territory of football, so if Richard Sherman or JJ Watt are ever looking for sympathy (not saying they are) about being exposed to injury, well, that's part of your job description, chums.

There's a lot of people out there barely getting by who would give anything to be in your position, even just to make a fraction of the money you make. Injuries be damned.

OT:  What is the story behind Sherman and Harbaugh not liking each other?  It seems like they found success together in college.  I have never been able to find anything regarding this.

Ok Richard. If he had vouched for you guys you may have ended up playing for the fricken Browns or Lions. Be careful what you wish for. You're very fortunate to end up on one of the best run franchises in the league, in an awesome city, with an amazing fan base. If you were on the Browns you may have never turned into the player you did or received the money you have. You ungrateful Richard.

He's part of the new breed. Everything is about being disrespected and living with a never ending chip on his shoulder.

His combine results were not good, he wasn't good in zone coverage and his hips were stiff. Most scouts saw him as a backup but in his mind he was the greatest at everything in the history of history and when Harbaugh didn't give him that endorsement, surprise, it's another chip on his shoulder.

Well when you're on the West Coast, almost by default your games are going to go into the evening or start at night. At least when you play at home. Start times are dictated by East Coast viewership, so there's a reason you're never going to see a true "night game" on the West Coast.

If the game starts at 8 in Seattle, everyone on the East Coast is already in bed, and their ratings tank.

I've always been consistently surprised the NFL doesn't play the 2s and 3s more often on Thursdays. Understandably, those games are also important W's, but so is player safety. Gotta believe it falls on the position coaches to know how sore, fatigued, or injured each man is, it's on them to play a proper rotation. Can't blame everything on the system, there's still human choices being made that could solve the problems involved. Personally, I enjoy the opportunity to see a team's depth, and opportunities to see talent you wouldn't normally see every game. If teams / players don't like it, complain to your position coach, not the media

Because Goodell promised just enormous (and in my opinion unreachable) profit goals for the NFL going forward, he's going to be looking to extract every cent he can from that league. It would be like when the NBA fines teams for sitting the starters. The NFL will have a fit if their precious TNF turns into a pre-season game

There's a math problem with your analogy. The NBA has 82 games and the the NFL plays 16. NBA teams usually coast for parts of the season because there are more opportunities to do so.

At risk of oversimplifying things, missing one (1) game in the NFL is like missing five (5) games in the NFL.  Lebron can miss the occasional game and play often enough for the Cavs to earn a 1 seed.  NFL teams don't rest players unless they're injured or they clinch the 1 seed.
