OT - Reddit CFB Risk Update 6/10: One Front / OSU's new tactic

Submitted by ReegsShannon on

Last night we had a pretty unlucky RNG night (we expected to have won two more territories than we did), but our overall situation has only really changed in two ways.

1. OSU no longer borders us on the coast, so we don't need to devote resources there and can focus solely on the midwest.

2. We lost Akron, which means we can no longer attack Toledo. Toledo is an important territory because it borders every state of Michigan territory (except CMU). So that means we're atleast a couple days from breaking into Michigan and consolidating it. We'll get there though, Wisco is just too weak compared to us.

Also of note: OSU seems to be trying something different. Instead of pushing up from the coast like they have from the past. They are pushing South, likely to occupy Clemson and GT (and maybe Florida?). We're not too worried about because a split OSU force only makes taking the midwest even easier.

Here's a heatmap showing OSU's distribution:

Please do not post about your assignments in the thread below. Trying to keep everything a little bit more secure after our mole issue.

Announcements:

The "Blue Alliance" has been re-dubbed the "Allied Forces" and now consists of Michigan, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida, and Texas.  If you aren't using the website to get orders, then please refrain from attacking any territories controlled by our allies.

If you are a relatively new reddit user, please check the game page to ensure that you are not being flagged as a bot. If you are flagged you will see a text box like the one below. If you are flagged as a bot, your turns will not assist our chances to win (although you can still accumulate turns so you can level up stars). If you see this box, then follow the hyperlink to fill out the survey, but ALSO message /u/bakonydraco directly on reddit to get the issue sorted out.

Instructions to Join:

To join all you need to do is go to reddit.com/r/cfb and create an account if you don't already have one. Next, set your flair to Michigan. You can do this by clicking "Select Flair" on the right side of the cfb subreddit. Finally, you can join and play the game at https://vote.redditcfb.com/cfbrisk.php

If you want to discuss the game in deeper detail and strategize with us, you can join our discord server found here: https://discord.gg/NZTdhta. We usually announce plans of what we want to attack/defend in the evenings, but we discuss strategy all day. Be warned though, there will be a vetting process to join the discord as we have had some mole issues from OSU. Even if you don’t pass the vetting process, we can still provide less-secret instructions in the general chat so that you can still help us towards our goals until we can fully 100% trust you.

Go Blue!

Instructions as to how to play:

At the beginning of the game. Every team was assigned one single territory, and so every territory is now named after that team. When you go to select an action in the game, you'll see option such as:

"Defend Buffalo", "Attack Penn State", "Attack Kent State".

This means that we border the location that was originally assigned to Penn State and Kent State. If you choose to attack Penn State, you will attempt to take that piece of land next round. Defend Buffalo, means that we currently own Buffalo's original homeland, and defending Buffalo means putting your stars towards keeping Buffalo from being taken.

After you submit what you're doing for the day, just sit back at wait! At Midnight EST all of the picks from all of the teams go in, and a random number generator selects a winner for each territory. Then it all happens again tomorrow.

My order says to attack a territory that we own. I'm defending it because I assume that was the intent, but someone might need to look over the list and correct it.

We have a substantial lead on amount of users (+700), but what must be our weakness is we have less average star power than the other contenders. I am guessing this is because we got going a little later in the game?

(Territories): Avg. Stars [users]

Florida (23): 1.975 [1173]

Nebraska (23): 1.896 [1163]

Michigan (14): 1.600 [1883]

Texas (11): 1.683 [716]

Wisconsin (11): 1.584 [527]

Oklahoma (8): 2.209 [306]

Virginia Tech (7): 1.541 [444]

Georgia Tech (6): 1.450 [832]

Texas A&M (6): 1.610 [697]

Stanford (6): 2.111 [99?!?]

Chaos (5): 1.027 [2709]

Ohio State (4): 1.671 [1187]

Clemson (4): 1.708 [384]

Alabama (3): 1.912 [548]

The reason is because our userbase is full of a lot of people from Mgoblog who didn’t previously have reddit accounts. So we have lots of people with low stars due to not having karma/tenure. We got a HUGE spike in people participating once we started posting updates on here. Weirdly enough, we don’t get a ton of participation from Michigan fans who were already reddit users.

I'm a 4 star and have been playing religiously every single day ever since my brother shamed me for not playing on like day 8.  I have no idea what is going on or how we are doing.  I'm a good soldier.  I just do what I'm told and ask no questions.  Your daily updates are great and I look forward to them every day.  It's nice to have you explain it to me.  I would upvote you, but I can't figure out how to do that ever since the site got updated.

I could use some advice, I assume stars matter a lot.... I'm currently a 3 star, in a few turns I should be a 4. How much bigger impact is the star rating?

For reference:

5* for Links and CFB membership

3* for Turn played and CFB Karma (need 2200 Karma to level up)

1 Star for awards.

The way I see it, I either need to play a lot more turns or get active to CFB to get karma. Worth it?
