OT: Red Wings Trade Deadline

Submitted by MichiganStudent on

Its the second half of the NHL season and the Red Wings have something like $5.9 million in cap space to play with. Babcock has asked for a "heavy forward", but the Wings are adament that they will not use the money just for spendings sake.

With the potential reitrement or free agency departures of Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Bertuzzi, Stuart (has a step daughter attending HS in San Jose), Hudler, and Conklin the Wings may want to wait until the summer to make a big splash.

If its me, I hope they get a gritty power forward with scoring touch and a big and physical defenseman for a Cup run.

1. Tuomo Ruutu

2. Brendan Morrow

3. Bryan Allen

4. Travis Moen

or

5. Evgeni Nabokov to replace Conklin as Howards back up.

*please god not Ales Hemsky!

Who would the Wings part with in a trade? What players do you think are solid pick ups for a cup run and potential long term solution?

in lieu of the star players who he played head games with. Your not gonna get shit for huds, cleary, maybe flip. there is a lot of talent in g.r., take one of em off the board and take the smurf, flip, cleary, and get a D. this time we are not shopping for the goalie of the year, go howie,

Is the one I've liked to hear the most.  He's a short-term rental all the way as a UFA this summer, and he's an older, skilled, tough player who has that rare "captainesque" quality that makes hockey heads cream thinking about him.  He can rotate on any line, he's an insane luxury to have on a 2nd or Checking Line with his defensive skills, and he's deadly on the powerplay.  In better confines, he would have been a regular 70-80 point player.

I've personally always liked the guy, and I've seen him give it to the Wings hard a few times, and it'd be nice to see him on our side as he tries desperately to ride off into the sunset on a high note.  The guy has spent his entire career in Phoenix - I wouldn't wish that upon my worst enemy.

Sure he's got a forever contract, but the cap hit is limited and Holland has been all about forever contracts.   We need a top 6 forward to compete in the playoffs this year.  We'll have plenty of money off the books to worry about defensemen next year.

He'll provide the physicality and scoring that Z isn't ever going to -- I'm convinced he's got a perpetual back problem that will forever prevent him from being a significant "offensive" factor on this team again, his defense is just swell.

Q: What do you call the area of a hockey rink below the circles and outside of the trapezoid?

A: Zetterberg's shot chart!

Q: How do you have the most shots on your team but never score?

A: Only take backhands, like Zetterberg!
