They go down the list of all the sixth-year applications before they move to the underclassmen. This seems late for a sixth-year so they'll probably get to Devin sometime in the pretty near future.

Maybe it's just me, but these rulings seem very arbitrary.  What were the circumstances surrounding Case Keenum's injuries that were that much worse than Smith's?  In fact, weren't Keenum and his coach pretty startled when they heard that his 6th year was granted?

Not that I really care, but these are the things I ponder at 5:54 while sitting in front of my computer in a t-shirt and boxers.

So I looked into it a little bit..

"I had a lot of people telling me I was going to get it and I wasn't sure I was, I had no clear feeling one way or the other," Keenum said. "Then coach Sumlin called and told me I got it. I was excited. I called my dad and he screamed like a little girl.

Keenum earning a sixth year was a bit of an upset. According to NCAA rules, in order to qualify for a medical hardship, a player must show that he missed two seasons due to circumstances beyond his control. Keenum redshirted his first season in 2006, but the university argued that Keenum suffered a shoulder injury that led to the redshirt.

I'm not sure what made Smith's circumstances anymore 'controlled' than Keenum's, but whatever.

What were the circumstances around Smith's missed season in 2007?  The article on Purdue's site doesn't specify.  Perhaps he broke a leg on purpose in some elaborate insurance scam, and the NCAA found that too "controlled" for their tastes.

If only his daddy had done it, he could have pleaded ignorance!

I don't know the specifics but Keith missed his second yr due to family issues. He went home for a while and many thought he wouldn't come back. His dad was in the military and they moved around a lot. He was the quarterback at his high school in fort hood, tx. The crazy part was that since military families move a lot his WR's were different every year and you couldn't build any chemistry. Keith is such an awesome person. I have had the pleasure of speaking with him on many occasions. He was voted by all Big Ten players to represent them and speak on their behalf at the Big Ten Kickoff event in Chicago before the season. Its a shame that scumbags like Cam Newton do what they do, and many other (non quality human beings) get 6th years every year and a good guy like Keith get shafted. Oh and by the way... since the NCAA waited so long to decide he hasn't been able to have contact with any agents or work out like many other prospect did. He will still get a chance at the next level, but this didn't help. He did get to go to the combine, but was limited from certain activities in terms of contact with certain people, due to this status. A real shame... Best of luck to Keith Smith. He will graduate in May and has aspirations of doing forensics and working for the FBI.

Probably the best case scenario for him. Unless he's enrolled in graduate school, I'd hate to be known as the guy that took 6 years to complete his bachelors degree.
