OT: Pistons Hire Stan Van Gundy

Submitted by nmumike on

Van Gundy will join the Los Angeles Clippers' Doc Rivers and San Antonio Spurs' Gregg Popovich as the only coaches with full authority over personnel decisions.

Question is, will he bring along someone to be the GM, or help with that like Otis Smith, and who will his assistants be?

would be a great fit for SVG's (presumed) offense.  He's a facilitator and a strong shooter (had a down year this year).  Problem is, somebody is probably going to give him a max contract and I'm not sure he's worth quite that much.  Would much rather wait and see what happens with Chandler Parsons.

He's not on par with the typical max level player, but his max contract would be the "6 or fewer years of experience" version, and with the amount of space the Pistons have and with the cap looking like it's going up over the next few years, I don't think it would be as bad as "max contract" implies.

Games like last night are what keep me from watching the NBA anymore though. I saw the highlights. NBA refs are worse than college basketball refs when it comes to controlling the game. Just terrible.

the NBA refs got the controversal call right.  According to the NBA rule #8, Section 11:

""If a player has his hand in contact with the ball and an opponent hits the hand causing the ball to go out-of-bounds, the team whose player had his hand on the ball retains possession."

Is it a bad rule? Yes, but the NBA refs got the call right under this rule. LAC are crying that they got screwed but when in reality they choked their way out of a win against OKC. OKC had no business winning this game and did it. Kudos to them for not giving up.  Durant was clutch and Westbrook made his FTs.

People don't seem to understand there's a rule in place if a defender knock a ballhandler's hand causing the ball handler to lose control of the ball even if he last touched the ball, the possession belongs to the ball handler, not the defender.

you just stated doesn't apply to the rule that I stated. This is what the NBA refs are going off from which is why the OKC retain possession.

EDIT: Same thing just happened at Miami/Brooklyn game.  Ball went off Pierce's hands but LBJ knocked his hands out causing Pierce to lose possession. Still the NBA refs awarded the ball to the Nets.

By "he", I meant the defender. The hand of the ball handler on the ball is considered to be part of the ball and not part of the ball handler. So technically the defender touched the ball last by hitting the hand on the ball, and it's out of bounds off the defender. It's a technical fiction used in the rules. It's pretty much intended for situations where the defender blocks a shot from behind and knocks it out of bounds in doing so.

we're basically saying the same thing. Carry on!

It's just funny how the LAC and media how they got screwed when in reality, the NBA refs got the call right on reviews.  It's LAC's own fault that they let this happen.
