OT- Philadelphia Flyers hire Dave Hakstol

Submitted by Canadian on
This fills one NHL spot and creates an opening at a very successful hockey school (university of North Dakota).
The UND hire could end up taking away a potential candidate for Red Berenson's replacement (of course only if Pearson doesn't return).

I don't think you realize how annoyed their fans really are with him that he has that many Frozen Fours and zero titles.

I personally wished he stayed. UND losing in the national semifinals all the time was funny.

Ah so when Red retires everyone else around the country will think all Michigan fans are ecstatic his career is over based off some threads on here. There are UND fans who are upset about lack of title but still happy with how good they've been.

North Dakota hockey fans are the equivalent of Kentucky basketball fans or Ohio State football fans. They think their program is God's gift to earth and they should win the title every year. Wouldnt surprise me at all if a significant portion of their fanbase saw this as a good thing for their program

The Flyers were said to have been pushing to the forefront of the Mike Babcock sweepstakes just a week ago. This news makes me happy.

Interesting turn of events. No doubt he did exceedingly well at UND, but does it seem a bit odd to jump directly from college to the NHL? I don't know much about his background, so maybe he has previous pro level experience (ECHL, AHL) or even CHL experience.

Herb Brooks left St. Cloud for the NHL in 87. Badger Bob Johnson left Wisconsin for Calgary in 82.

Those are the only two I can think of in recent history.

Edi: According to Twitter there have only been 4. Hakstol, Johnson, Brooks and Ned Harkness, who went to the Wings from Cornell in the 70's.

Also, this won't affect Michigan's HC position because they're going to promote from within. Either a current or former UND assistant.

One thing to look out for is recruiting. UND has been hauling in recruits on another level; Andrew Peski, Grant Mismash, Matej Tomek, Brock Boeser. They even came to Michigan and grabbed Collin Adams from Honeybaked. It will be interesting to see if they can hang on to everyone.

I'm sure a section of the North Dakota fanbase is yelling GOOD RIDDANCE because they always choked, but be careful what you wish for NoDak. He made a ton of frozen fours.

Wouldnt surprise me a ton if they took a step back after this (it's hard to be much better)
