OT: NCAA Closing in on Lane Kiffin

Lane Kiffin's just may have exhausted his ability to fail upward.  According to Joe Schad:

NCAA investigators have asked to speak with running back Bryce Brown about the recruiting practices at Tennessee under Lane Kiffin, Arthur Brown, Bryce's father, said Wednesday.

Arthur Brown said he's delayed the NCAA's request to meet soon in Witchita, Kan., because he's been preparing for an appeal for Bryce to be granted a transfer from Tennesssee. Brown said he and his son had the appeal teleconference with Tennessee on Wednesday and it lasted an hour and a half.

As for the NCAA inquiry, Arthur Brown said his family will cooperate with investigators. "They said they want to talk about the recruiting practices of Tennessee under Kiffin," Arthur Brown said. "We have nothing to hide. We have no need to be deceptive. If we made a mistake I can say it would not have been intentional. But I think this is about more than Bryce."

This has the potential to get very ugly for Kiffin, Tennessee and USC.

to the other response - i watched the games, i was impressed, especially against bama and florida.  i agree its a small sample size, but by that same argument you certainly cant call it a failure.  but if rr had gone 7-6 his first year here (and been competitive in losses), what would have been the response?  i live in socal, i hate usc as much as anybody, and maybe kiffin is a slimeball, or maybe this is all carefully planned strategy.  i think he has talent, and he's definitely entertaining

A link to wikipedia only indicates that you are either not prepared to argue or incapable of arguing your point. Kiffin "coached" a bunch of 5-star WRs into NFL busts, then helped to oust Norm Chow. To top it off, USC's offense under his command was not appreciably different from that offense under Chow or Sarkisian. In short, Kiffin was just another body at USC. The only merit he's got is that his father is Monte Kiffin. He's the George W. Bush of college football.

not to delve into politics, but thats one crappy analogy, unless you MEANT to equate bush's results with recruiting, conference, and national titles

so when you said he didnt have success at usc, you meant to say he wasnt responsible for the success at usc, because he very clearly DID have success.  which is, of course reasonable, its very common for the OC and recruiting coordinator to have no impact on the offense and recruiting classes, especially if youd like to believe that.  of course, you know exactly what was going on in the locker room there

right, there were some busts,  thats going to happen more frequently when guys are drafted high.  not sure how much correlation that has with how good of a COLLEGE coach he was, but its certainly one argument in your favor

I guess if you want to make the distinction between "experiencing success" and "causing success" (or being responsible for success), that's your business. Semantic arguments over the meaning of "have" notwithstanding, I honestly believe that there's little empirical evidence that Kiffin is anything other than a fair-to-middling coach.
