OT: My Ed White/Space, Bitches. Space. Tattoo

Submitted by kdhoffma on August 2nd, 2019 at 4:34 PM

Being pretty slow around here, and with all of the hoopla surrounding NASA and the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, I thought I'd post a picture of the tattoo I got this year.  It was my first tattoo and a 4 session piece that took around 20+ hours to complete.

For those unaware, Ed White was a University of Michigan graduate and the first American spacewalker... he also died in the Apollo 1 launch pad test fire.

I decided to get this iconic image as my first tattoo for a few reasons.  Obviously being a fellow UMich Aerospace graduate was #1.  Secondly, I work for NASA and one of the things I do is provide risk assessments for every EVA (spaceewalk.)  Lastly, my kids all went to the elementary school down her named after Ed White.

Holy Hell that is awesome -- especially because of the meaning to you. I have yet to get any myself, but I would certainly hope I would be wise enough to choose something with actual, unique meaning should that ever change.

Thanks man, appreciate the kind words.  After getting it, I realize tattoos are fun.  I certainly recommend going with something meaningful and spending time finding the right artist.  You get what you pay for with tattoos.  However, because they are fun, I have no issue with those those who go at it from that perspective rather than the meaning behind it.

That is beyond cool. The level of detail is amazing.

I'm thinking about getting my first tattoo soon and this makes me want to run right out and get it done.

Well damn, that's the "Right Stuff".

South University & East University is "McDivitt-White" corner/plaza.

(Where old Ulrich's was).  Most folks will walk by that corner, never stop to see/read plaque.

Picture is iconic, tatt is epic.

Go Blue you space bitches.

The tattoo looks awesome! But in general space-related subjects of tattoos aren't my favourite. Actually, I decided to put a raven on my shoulder after reading an article here https://raventattoos.com about the meanings of such tattoos, history, and other facts.
