Maybe my vision is shortsighted, but I just don’t see this as something that’s gonna be very successful.

Not sure if the owners think this is gonna be the next NFL on Amazon Prime or what, but I’m not a bean counter or MBA-toting executive.

I don't necessarily agree with MLB potentially teaming up with "Bullshit Sports" but this is not surprising.

With the dumbass YouTube games and the upcoming "Field of Dreams Game", the League is searching for ways to get more people to watch.

I'm actually a fan of the YouTube games. I think one of the reasons that the NFL is so successful is that it's games are available on broadcast - or, you can easily access them without paying an arm and a leg. I think that MLB's blackout policy has contributed to baseball's declining ratings - of course less people watch it when you need to shell out $100/month to watch the local team. If you make more games accessible to watch without paying for premium costs, I think it can help grow the game.

Really it doesn't solve the blackout policy. But they make so much money from less people that they don't care.

I mean, Portnoy says some pretty racist and sexist things when given the opportunity.  It may all be a "character" he's playing but there's a good amount of evidence that he says racist and sexist things.

Plenty of evidence that Barstool is bad and shouldn't be supported by anyone even if that founder is a Michigan alum. To say otherwise is putting your head into the sand

I think the ban still exists due to inertia at this point.  A decade ago, when the founder/president was the only prominent personality in the company and regularly generating cringe-inducing content, a Barstool ban made more sense.

The present-day company is much different than that early 2010s version. Pardon My Take is the #1 sports podcast in the country. The company has given opportunities for a lot of men and women to launch careers in sports media that otherwise would have never been given a chance by "mainstream media". ESPN has a decades-long history of (at the least) tolerating harassment of female employees by their stars. That doesn't erase all of the terrible things Portnoy has said over the years, but Barstool is much more than him now.

I was chatting w/ a friend this evening --- Barstool came up and he drew an analogy between Portnoy and Howard Stern.

I doubt Portnoy ever becomes completely mainstream, but Barstool has changed in the last 10 years.  Still "shock jock" but a bit less cringe as their fanbase aged out a bit.  Portnoy of the 2010s was like Stern in the 1990s.

And I can also see the Barstool/Portnoy of the 2020s also being like Stern in the 2000s.  Gradually less cringy, creeping toward but never becoming fully mainstream.

The real Aristotle would never post something so dumb.

So because someone or something is "niche popular" and others don't like it...they're jealous?

Well then what do we call someone who is popular (but not majority popular) and extremely popular to a certain group that others don't like, or support and find to be ignorant/racist/sexist?

I hope that's not jealousy as well.

I don't know where <<<retracted>>> is getting all this $$$ to sponsor Bowl Games and bid on MLB games.

That's the more interesting question to me.

Sidebar, but since it is "Dinger" related ..... I'm pretty disappointed with my hometown team, the Colorado Rockies, today.  They literally jumped to the incorrect conclusion that one of their fans is a racist, as opposed to giving him any benefit of a doubt.
