OT: The Masters 2024 edition

Submitted by drjaws on April 11th, 2024 at 9:51 AM

For all you golf fans out there, the Masters is starting shortly after a brief weather delay.

Will Tiger make the cut? Will Rory ever win the career Grand Slam? Which young player will challenge for green jacket? Who ya got winning?

Can watch on ESPN Thu-Fri from 3pm to 7:30pm and Sat-Sun most of the afternoon on CBS or, if you’re like me and would rather stream on your computer, you can watch at the Masters website (LINK).

same. signals the official start of the golf season in my opinion since this is typically the time of year I can regularly get out on the course. supposed to be prepping for the final round of a career defining job interview tomorrow morning but I find myself watching Jack Nicklaus on the range.

It's tough seeing so little of Tiger on the course, watching him flash at times, but then his health seems to catch up with him.  Heart says he makes it to the weekend, but my head says no.  I think Rory picks up a Masters win sometime in the next 5 years.  Aberg and Zalatoris are the young guys I'd expect to see sniffing around the leaderboard come the weekend.

Friday is going to be a really long day for Tiger.   Not sure how well his body will hold up.   He's got a late start today so with the weather delay he probably won't finish his round.  Friday will be getting up super early, finish the first round, have a short break while the first round finishes and then start the second round.

I think Scheffler wins it if he's putting holds up for him. He is one of the best ball strikers on the tour, and I know many PGA-certified coaches are confused by his backfoot sliding techniques that defy convention.

Scottie for the W, Xander with the 54 hole lead and a 74 on Sunday to drop him out of the top 3, Brooks Koepka another runner-up finish, Jason Day with the worst outfit you've ever seen on Friday.  Lock it in!

Think it's 50-50 on Tiger making the cut, those are in fact the odds and I bet that he would. Scottie is playing so well it doesn't seem fair. Think Rory has to win a different major first to end that drought and then maybe a Masters. Aberg seems so calm, don't know if that's just on the outside, but he is one supremely talented Masters rookie.

The Masters starts the golf year in earnest for me.  I’ve been fortunate to be in Augusta for the Masters and, it’s a special and unique experience.

I don’t think Tiger makes the cut - the weather is going to make the course a bit longer and though his course knowledge and management c have been historically very strong - the length will offset most of that advantage.

As for my favorite - I’ll be cheering for Rory.  He’s dealt with adversity in Augusta before - and I respect his demeanor on and off the course.

Oh - if I never hear Nance say -  “one for the ages” - I’ll be quite content.

Tiger does not have any issues with distance, despite his age.

Tiger obviously has physical limitations and his body is in rough shape, but from a pure golfing perspective what Tiger needs is a fast start.  Historically, even when he was setting records and beating everybody, he sucked at opening rounds.  He is basically +2 through 3 at every Thursday and Friday of every tournament he plays.  He bogeyed the first hole in every round of the US Open he won at Torrey Pines.  Let him go -3 through 5 or 6 holes and it is an entirely different ballgame.

In terms of simply golfing ability, he is currently still in the top handful of guys out there.  He just cannot dig out of holes anymore so he needs to stop digging them.

Also rooting for Rory.  I was down there yesterday (Wednesday) for the practice round -- lots of people would love to see him get the career slam, it seems.

And, FWIW, Berckmans absolutely lives up to the hype.  Fortunate enough to have done that a couple of times now, and it is hard to imagine a more special event for a sports fan.

It looks like the course, despite the wind, is set up for players to post a decent number.

It's about 3:00 pm EST - and 25 players are in red figures.   It will be interesting to follow over the next few days.

Its been hard for me to get into golf again of late.

I really want a young player to become another generational phenom (even 1/4 as good as prime Tiger), but it just hasnt happened yet. Also, ,ost of the guys are just uber-douchey or holier-than-thou and unlikeable to me.

I think the players are much better especially in the middle and back of the pack, but there are a lot fewer individuals. Very few guys like Elkington, Fuzzy, Payne, etc. The guys are very forumulaic in everything.

One thing I always notice is how much less articulate and confident players are now. Tiger and Phil are so much more poised than almost any current player. Compare the way Jack, Hale Irwin, and Ray Floyd speak to Justin Thomas or Speith or McIlory or Koepka and Dustin Johnson.  Maybe I am old and biased but I don't think so. Even watching clips of Jack give victory speeches when he was 30, I am startled at how much more mature he is than guys now./end of rant.

I didn't realize that Tiger and Nike parted ways. What's the back story on that? I just read his new apparel line is Sun Day Red. TaylorMade helped him develop it - looks pretty sharp.
