OT: Larry Scott gone as Pac-12 commissioner

I was surprised that Brian didn't mention this in today's Unverified Voracity: Larry Scott and the Pac-12 have parted ways, effective June 30th (his contract was set to expire in 2022).

The guy is Exhibit A for the insane amount of money flowing through college sports and the total mediocrity of much of its leadership: the guy will have earned about $50 million dollars, while flying around on chartered jets and staying in fancy hotels. He took almost $2 million in interest-free loans, and moved the headquarters to downtown San Francisco (paying ca. $90 million in rent). All this while being disliked by the people who worked for him and being terrible at his job.

He inherited a conference in 2009 with two powerhouse football programs in USC and Oregon, two powerhouse basketball programs in UCLA and Arizona and fast forward to 2021 these programs are not even close to the decade prior, with no new top dogs rising inside the conference either. The late-night TV deals that generated no national money and overspending on a dumbass headquarters in San Fran, he was a total mess of a leader. PAC 12 is the worst power 5 conference in football and basketball by a wide margin thanks to this guy.

1 PAC 12 team has made the final four since 2008.

2 PAC 12 teams have made the playoffs since it started in 2014, last one was 2016.

This dude was a disaster. The big splash that he sought to make out of the gate (i.e., creating a 16-team "super league" by poaching half of the Big XII) ended up not panning out, and many of the moves he's made since then have been head-scratchers. Trying to launch a TV network as a solo venture without a major broadcast partner was an exercise in lunacy. Most people outside of the Pac-12 aren't even aware that there is such a thing as the Pac-12 Network because most cable and satellite operators don't carry it.

But hey, he still gets a multimillion dollar golden parachute for doing nothing other than promising to stop showing up for work.

I would bet on his replacement being someone from one of the other power conferences, maybe an AD. With the money they pay, they should have an easy time hiring their first choice.

Hey, a guy's gotta ball, right?  In fairness to Scott, he did expand the conference to 12 teams with Utah & Colorad and they did sign the conference to a $3 billion TV deal with ESPN & Fox to create the Pac 12 Networks.
