OT: Kansas basketball self-imposes penalties from the 2019 FBI bball recruiting sting

Submitted by 1VaBlue1 on November 2nd, 2022 at 3:28 PM

So Kansas has Self-imposed a 4 game suspension for Bill Self and an assistant stemming from having paid recruits becoming public knowledge due to the FBI's sting operation back in 2017.  They'll sit out games against Omaha, North Carolina State,  and Southern Utah - and also against Duke in Indianapolis on Nov 15.  Guess they needed a 'real' game as a sacrifice...

The article also says they Self-imposed some minor (ie: MINOR) recruiting penalties.  These include 3 scholly's over 3 years; 13 fewer days to recruit this year; and cutting 4 official visits next year.  There are a couple others, but you get the point.  Nothing real, nothing serious, nothing to see.

This feels like a typical response - give the NCAA and the public something to salivate over that doesn't affect anything.  Anyone want to lay bets about how hard the NCAA will come down?  (BWAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!  I slay me!!)

Taking away scholarships in todays NIL basketball world shouldnt be considered a punishment.

This isnt even a slap on the wrist, its more like the NCAA giving Kansas a dirty look.

give a walk-on a bunch of NIL money and they are, for all 'intensive porpoises',  basically on scholarship.  not sure what team's donor will pay for that, but maybe there is what amounts to an endowed football scholarship, except that they call it the super-duper walk-on money bonanza scholarship and it has the same effect?

Being self-imposed penalties, it's Kansas giving itself the side-eye in the mirror.  And then laughing hysterically about how mean looking it is...

The NCAA has not yet spoken it's peace in this matter.  I'm sure the infractions committee is looking around at itself, nodding, smiling, saying 'yes, yes, they hurt themselves with this', 'HARRUMPH', 'a good lesson here'...

Well, the school admitted it was gonna be hard. But I'm glad they're doing the right thing.

ROFLMAO! Self didn't even apologize in his formal statement acknowledging the "self-punishment."

It's like the priest who goes into the back of the church to take off his clothes and whip himself for his delicious sins. Self is doing it with delirious pleasure.

Self’s contract explicitly says that he cannot be fired because of this investigation.  Absolutely wild stuff but HC contracts jumped the shark so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised

The University of Kansas, NCAA, or Bill Self himself - not imposing anything more significant that a "slap on my own wrist" - says it all.   What a joke.

Kansas implements meaningless penalties that will have negligible effects on the program and the spineless NCAA nods in approval.

There, I fixed it for you.

Is there any truth to one of the penalties?

I heard that potential recruits and players - who still receive "occasional, informal, not necessarily NIL related cash donations" - will need to be provide their choice of bill denominations?   In the past, it was usually paid in $20's.  I've heard that with these self imposed penalties - Kansas and it's associated boosters, will have to offer the potential recruits or players, their choice of bill - so, it could be $ 50's or $ 100's only.
