OT-ish: Former OL coach Greg Frey to Duke

Submitted by Magnus on January 21st, 2020 at 8:30 PM

Duke has hired former Michigan offensive line coach Greg Frey. Frey coached at Michigan under Rich Rodriguez and then again in 2017, when he coached the tackles and tight ends (which was largely a failure). He spent 2018 at FSU, which also did not go well.

I think Frey is a solid coach, but his last couple stops have not gone well. I can see why the 2017 Michigan thing didn't work out, but I expected a little more from the line at FSU this past season.

There was an excellent recent diary post that dug into this a little bit.  If you haven’t read the recruiting diary post (long and many comments), I’d recommend.  If it’s all true, it’s very instructive.

Don’t disagree but it is worth noting that Warriner was after both of these guys as well when he was at UM (NTUM) and actually had one committed before he flipped to Michigan.

(Only reason I know this is that some dude on Twitter tried to call out Steve Lorenz for giving Warriner some credit for these guys..)

Sounds like he needs his recruits, and can't do much with others.

I also did notice what he did at Indiana.

I'm forgetting now but why did he leave here? Because of Drevno?  Who outlasted who?

this is the perfect fit for a guy like Frey. Cutcliffe will give him almost complete control over recruiting OL and he'll be able to mold his athletic guys into tackles, which is especially important at a place like Duke that isn't recruiting the top tier of guys.

I liked him as an oline coach both under RR and Harbaugh.  It wasn't on Funk that RR wanted his oline closer to 280 than 320.  I thought Funk did an excellent job of evaluating Oline recruits.

obviously he thought he was coming to UM to work for David Cutcliffe, the real coach we wanted all along, didn't get the memo, and is finally where he wanted to be all along
