OT: I sat next to Lloyd Carr in church

Submitted by MBAgoblue on
When I lived in Ann Arbor he attended the same church I did. Only ever saw him in the off-season, and then he and the lovely Mrs. Carr would come in after everyone was seated, sit in the back and leave as soon as possible. I used to sit the back pews, and once, just as I hoped, Lloyd actually sat next to me. I can authoritatively report that he 1) he signed the registry L. Carr, 2) he does not sing loudly and 3) he put an envelope in the collection plate. That is all.

Dude, was this a senior moment? "When I lived in Ann Arbor"....... Were you reminiscing about days of yore and decided to share one of your dementia thoughts?

You sir have not been paying attention. I have several OT posts to my "credit". BTW, I should have had a big (HUMOR) after my reply. Thought it was obvious that I was being humorous. I'm still wondering, though -- what exactly prompted the post? Was it a message from god? (Humor)

with a football coach in a non-football setting. About 1994, I used a pay phone in the United Terminal at O'Hare next to Tom Osborne, who was saying he was looking forward to the upcoming in-home visit; Tom seemed like a folksy guy. I once took a leak next to Jimmy Johnson (or a guy who looked exactly like him) in the Las Vegas airport; Jimmy did not wash his hands afterward ( I did ).

I sat next to DMX at the Phoenix Airport bar...which is odd considering he should be in jail. Anyways, was Tebow giving the Sermon the day you sat next to Lloyd?

Close. Congregational. Remember the weird ESPN fluff piece where a retired M professor of music tried to teach Nick Lachey to sing The Victors? That was the church's director of music, Dr. Willis Patterson. I only mention it because it makes me giggle to think of Lloyd arranging the lesson.

Oh, Willis... He used to be the director of the Men's Glee club, and was crazy good - they won a couple VERY prestigious international competitions while he was there. I sang in church choir with him a couple years ago though, and now that guy is just crazy... not good anymore. I about choked when I saw that of all people HE was the one brought in to teach the Victors.

It is always an interesting question what to do when you are an anonymous white male crossing the path of a famous or infamous public individual. Life has brought me past Roy Tarpley, Mark Fidrich (interview at the height of his fame), Glen Rice (guarding him in pickup ball at the CCRB years ago), Magic Johnson, Dick Vitale (in a bar in Champaign), and Bill Walton (at O'Hare). Generally, I have always assumed you want to give someone space, greet them respectfully, if at all, and not ask for an autograph. On this last, I guess I'd make an exception if my seven year old boy was with me. I remember a roommate who actually crashed a party at Bo's house while a HS student. Apparently, Bo took it well. The kids crashing the party were clueless, and not in awe of Bo's fame. What strikes me is that people are just people, and want to be treated as a normal person. I think Carr was even more this way than many famous folks.
