OT- The Herd rips Drew Sharp

Submitted by VAWolverine on
Colin Cowherd ripped Drew Sharp about his column today in the Detroit daily that cannot be named. Drew has written that RR needs to win the Big 10 championship next year or he should be let go. Colin said this idea is ridiculous and that Sharp needs to do better. Colin said sports writers at newspapers are like sports talk radio in 1984 iin that they write bombastic fiction.

Yeah winning the Big Ten is pretty much out of the question and the fans won't expect it or be very disappointed if we fall short. But I do think that he needs a winning record to keep his job.

I think that you were spot on when you said that fans won't expect a Big 10 title next year...at least not in the preseason. But if we go 5-0 next year to start the year, the consensus will be "Title or Bust". That is unfortunate, but probably true. As for being out of the question. I think it is very much within the realm of possibility that UM could be serious contenders for the conference next year. That cannot and will not be the goal, however, we may just find ourselves with a shot heading into Columbus. I expect next year will bring a more consistent offense and more athletic and dependable defense. Through Barwis all things are possible.

Read that blip verbatim from Sharp's column, so if he said "Big Ten championship" (which I think he did, I was watching)--then that's what Sharp said. Besides, it's drew Sharp. He would probably say Rodriguez needs to win the WWE Heavyweight Championship and it wouldn't be out of character.

The column reads, "winning Big Ten record." The headline reads, "Win The Big Ten." (or at least, that's how the headline was written this morning) Chalk that one up to an idiot headline writing editor.

You would have to look far and wide to find someone who thinks less of Sharp, but I just read his column (I know I know), and he said RR needs "a winning Big 10 record" in 2010 to keep his job. I actually don't think that's such a crazy suggestion, but I am an optimist who expects the question to be made moot by next year's team.

Cowherd went on to say that any thought of firing Rodriguez is ridiculous, and he REALLY went on to tow the company line about time and "getting his guys in"--and also talked about how Carr left Michigan in a totally eroded state with no talent--not to mention Rodriguez runs a totally different offensive system. He also said RR is a great recruiter and praised his work at WVU, saying he will bring Michigan "back." Cowherd might be bombastic, but every time I hear him talk about Michigan, he has said one of three things: it was an eroding, under achieving program under Carr; that UM would be a force to be feared with a better coach; and that the Rodriguez hire is a good one and will pan out. Now, he may be critical of the current state, and (like about 40 billion others) may wonder what the hell is going on RIGHT NOW, but if what he said today is a reflection of his true opinion of Michigan, it should have been very soothing and affirming for what most posters here seem to believe.

You're right. I listened to it today too. Earlier this year he said Michigan would be "dominating" the B10 in a year or two. Cowherd is over the top but he knows his stuff for covering sports nationally. Though later he had Howard Beardsley (Beasley?) on and asked about Michigan. Howard said WI would run over MI and Cowherd laughed in agreement or amusement, FWIW.

I could have SWORN that both the column and title said Rich Rod needed to win the Big 10 next year to keep his job. The Rivals Newsstand still has the title as "Rich Rodriguez must win Big Ten in '10". Maybe I misread it this morning, but I wouldn't put it past the FreeP to edit their content. (For the record, that's the first Freep link I've clicked since their 'investigation' into M practice time and it was an accident...) I also hate the personal jabs at Rich Rod in that column. It's pretty annoying.

cowherd is a serious dick, but with regard to uofm football, and big 10 football in general, he has always been spot on.

Cowherde ripped Carr's program and as far as everything I have heard, none of it was untrue. He is clearly a fan of Rodriguez and has been saying that Michigan will be good in a few years ever since RR took over. He was saying this since the "snake oil" comments and the "gentlemens agreement". He said other coaches were complaining because they were scared. Cowherd comes off like a dick to alot of fans from alot of places. That's because he speaks the ttruth and most fans don;t want to hear it. He is in a totally different class then Sharp (who is a bottom feeder and a pot stirrer) and to put them in the same class is just plain wrong.
