schadjoe Auburn announces QB Cam Newton entering NFL Draft

espn4d Auburn has sent out release announcing (shock!) Cam Newton is going pro.

espn4d Release quotes Cam saying the decision was difficult. Sure it was.

Official Auburn release.

Auburn junior quarterback Cam Newton will forgo his senior season and make himself eligible for the 2011 National Football League Draft.

"This decision was difficult for me and my family," Newton said. "After talking to Coach Chizik and Coach Malzahn, I think it is best that I make that next step in my career and forgo my senior season and enter the NFL Draft. It was a very hard decision for me, especially after coming off the great season we had at Auburn. I'm blessed to have been around an excellent environment and have great teammates, coaches and support from the Auburn family. It's been a blessing for me to be a part of something so great. Any time you win games it's a big deal, but for this school to win a BCS National Championship, what a way to make people happy. Auburn is a special place that I can call home."

Todd McShay lists him as his 3rd ranked QB, FWIW.

This also gives the NCAA zero leverage to investigate him,  Cam and his daddy can just refuse to talk to them.  The NCAA can then shrug and move on (while counting their money from the TV deal.)  Its just a good thing thay he didn't stretch for 20 extra minutes!

(Money aside) what was left at the college level.  He won all the player of the year awards and the national championship.  I think he could improve as a passer and up his draft stock, but he really doesn't have anything left to prove at the college level.

As Bill Simmons tweeted, congratulations to Auburn for winning the 2011 National Championship, and congratulations to Oregon for being retroactively named the 2011 National Champions in 2013.

If it did, Auburn would be NC for the year USC had to vacate.  I guess that makes it sort of a wash.

All of this bullshit of having no champion some years and no Heisman some years is one reason (I guess it's actually two) that it would be great to just let players get paid from wherever they can find the money.

I think booster clubs for the teams should be able to set up a central website seperate from the schools with a paypal account.  If your team does great, and you want to buy a player a few pizzas or a car, just put the money into his or her paypal account.  Let the market decide who makes what.  Let the players have some money without the schools, the NCAA, or Title IX having anything to do with it.

Football players wouldn't have to be embarassed about their rides, and Maya Moore could laugh about making more than any of the male athletes at her school.
