OT - the "Bird's Nest" is already obsolete

Beijing wants the five-month-old tenantless stadium to "anchor a shopping complex." Uh, good luck with that. http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/news?slug=ap-birdsnestfuture&prov=ap&t… The Olympics are fun while they're going on, but honestly, is it really worth it to a city to spend gigantic sums of money building new sports facilities when most of them have no use after the two weeks are over?

gosh, man, it's so bad down here. when ever you're driving on the interstate, you see armadas (on land, of course) of electric trucks. apparently, someone said it's closer to half than just parts. regardless, it's really bad.

I think that it is worth it if the host city has a plan in place before the games. In most cases the facilities are put to good use afterwards. But it doesn't really surprise me that China fucked it up.

For instance, they extended their subway lines pretty dramatically as part of the Olympics. Beijing desperately needs mass transit (besides buses), and assuming that the new lines are still running I think this was a good decision. Having said that, they built so goddamn much for the Olympics that it's inevitable that a fair amount of it is going to be wasted.

olympics that i can remember Atlanta is the only city that had a sound plan in place. the olympic stadium got turned into turner field, they split the georgia dome down the middle and used one side for basketball and the other side for gymnastics and other sports i think. and i aslo believe that they used a lot of GT's facilities for other events. then you have cities like montreal who went so far in debt that i think they are still paying it off.
