OT: Better Call Saul /K-Strass Yo Yo master

Submitted by Zoltanrules on

Breaking Bad was one of my favorite shows ever and I never thought any spin off could approach it. Last week's Season Premier of Better Call Saul reminded me of how much I like that show almost as much. The clever writing, risk taking, and great characters make for must see TV as Slippin Jimmy become Saul Goodman (and then Cinnabon Guy).

I chuckled last week at Mark Proksch (from The Office) who played the drug dealer,hummer-driving (license plate: "Playuh"), aka Kenny "K-Strass" Strasser, the Yo-Yo master who pranked morning news shows across the country in 2010 with his masterful skills and environmental wisdom. If you think Andy Kaufmann was funny check this out. If you are too young to know who he is Google him and "Man on the Moon".

So it's not 20 minutes of stringing a poor yippy skippy TV sap along. It's four or five different appearance clips put together. I personally like the last 5 minute bit the best because the host is just so bubbly and it just gets more awkward. I don't know how one stays in character and doesn't start busting out laughing. Again sort of like Andy Kaufmann and his wrestling bits with Jerry Lawler.

Like Slippin Jimmy I like to flip life's danger switch on and off once in a while.

Just curious

Is anyone watching Better Call Saul without having seen Breaking Bad first? I'm wondering if non BB-fans like it as much.

IMO, you don't need to have watched BB to like Better Call Saul, but you won't appreciate some of the Easter eggs and callbacks. Also you probably won't like Mike's story nearly as much as you would if you'd seen BB.

I watched all of Breaking Bad over about 9 months, slow binge-watching? I was fearful that it would not live up to the really high expecations created by several friends who had loved it. Maybe halfway in I was thinking -yes this is definately good, but not as great (to me), as others saw it. By the time I had finished, I was blown away. Things built on each other so well. Though not obvious to me, episode by episode, in retrospect I was impressed with how well it fit together, from first season to last. The writers had a plan as opposed to- wow we have a popular successful show- how do we keep it going, or keep topping ourselves?

Walter White was a tragic figure and for me the TV series equivalent of a Shakesperean tragic figure. Specatular and I was moved by the experience.

I approached Better Call Saul last season with trepidation, this time under the weight of my own hopes/expecations. If I had never seen Breaking Bad, I'm not sure I would have made it past one or two episodes of BCS. But because of the good will from BB and my trust in Vince Gilligan, I perservered and the show grew on me. I enjoy it, but for me it still doesn't approach the quality of BB.
