OT - Best things about college football
As much as I loved Michigan getting back in the NCAA tourney, I just didn't feel the excitement I felt with football ... and that got me thinking. So I put together my 65 reasons to love college football:
http://foreversaturdayblog.blogspot.com/2009/03/65-reasons-to-love-coll…
Let me know what you think and if I missed anything obvious (a lot of things could be replaced with something similar -- the "Sea of Red" and Michigan's banner aren't necessarily a BETTER tradition than Tennessee's running through the "T" ... it's just personal preference in terms of my experiences).
I wish Michigan fans could unite like the Sea of Red..
Moses will fix that unity shit.
+10000
But... 10 thoughts of my own.
1.) Northwestern really doesn't compete for a Big Ten title evry year.
2.) Oregons uniforms are an acquired taste I guess, but I too admire the effort.
3.) Like the kicks, exciting to half 59:50 mean nothing but the leg of a tiny 5'7" 150 lb kicker.
4.) Blackshirts are losing respect.
5.) Seeing ND's helmets above UM's makes me furious. The wings? Come on.
6.) Love the bands, FWIW Wisconin-Michigan was one of the best band games I've seen.
7.) Agree with the playoff/regular season thing.
8.) Michigan Ohio State deserves a 2-A, 2-B with Army-Navy, it's really lopsided.
9.) #1 pumps me up in March, but the car trip from GR is thankfully absent.
10.) Great job no omissions.
I might have overstated that a little bit. I also had a hard time with Army-Navy. I don't really think the football itself is better than Michigan-Ohio State (obviously), just the experience is something I'd love to take part in some time.
And the helmets were a tough call. Obviously I worship the wings, but I'm sure I'd be the other way around if I grew up as a Notre Dame fan (which many of my friends are).
I did like it though, a lot
They should be #1. You look at them and all of a sudden, you just forget all your troubles. You just can not stop smiling when looking at a USC song girl.
The banner.
The Victors.
The sky over the Big House on a fall day.
Tailgating provides an excuse to indulge my borderline alcoholism.
I miss Keith Jackson calling games, man. He's gotta be my all-time favorite announcer (I wasn't around for Ufer, so it's sort of hard to appreciate him in the same way as some of the elder Michigan fans). Plus, Keith Jackson was the man for the UM/OSU game.
If I can't hear Keith Jackson, I'd rather listen to the commentators that really, really suck and hearing stupid analogies and the like (thank you, Awful Announcing; I love your site). Some people can't stand it, but I think it's hilarious. It's honestly entertaining to me. Remember this gem from the Illinois game -- "When we come back, Michigan will have their backs to the wall, both physically and literally"? Even worse, from one of the Alabama games: "Coffee goes left -- sounds kinda like the election last Tuesday."

was the king. To me, his voice is college football. I'm old enough to remember Ufer. It might be blasphemy, but he was too manic and partisan. The horn was an over used gimmick. He was fun to listen to as a child, but Jackson (again) was the king of college announcers.

As long a I live I will never forget that texas/USC game thathe called. He was college football to me, and he still is
I was just wondering how a thread about college football is OT :P
Well it wasn't specifically Michigan-related, but I guess that was fairly obvious from the title.

Neither can the recruits.
Why should the Big Ten Champion be "rewarded" with a road game against the best team money can buy and the best refs money can buy?
Remember the "Phantom Touchdown?"
How about the bogus holding call on the fake punt in Bo's last game? How about the section in the paperback version of Bo's biography where he said that when he walked past the refs' locker room he heard one of them say, "there's no way I was gonna let that son of a bitch win his last game here?"
The blatant unfairness of the Rose Bowl is one of the most compelling arguments I have ever seen for a D-1 playoff. It might be "the grandaddy of them all," but gramps needs to be put to bed now.
Most of the bowls are unfair to the midwest teams because they're so far away. The Rose is an advantage to pretty much every PAC 10 team and for UCLA it's their own freaking stadium! The sugar bowl is unfair because it's right in LSU's backyard, Orange bowl right in Florida's. It just sucks.

What the hell did you do wrong in your life that brings you to the point where you are 56 years old trolling various college football boards spewing unsubstantiated accusations and adolescent phrases? At what point did you fuck things up so much, that this is the person you've become?
I need to know. Because whatever you did, I want to avoid doing the same thing. I want to do everything in my power to prevent becoming a "fan" like you when I am your age.
So when WSU got screwed out of their last play in the 1997 Rose Bowl ... was it because the refs had a vendetta against Ryan Leaf? Did Carr pay someone off? Why, tater, why were the Freemasons working against the Cougars in that game and helping the Wolverines?
Or could it be - just maybe - that sometimes MISTAKES HAPPEN and are not the product of some sort of massive conspiracy against Michigan?
WSU didn't get screwed. It's normal for 2-3 seconds to go off the clock when someone spikes the ball. It's very rare for only second to go off. There were two seconds left when the ball was snapped, so it's not surprising they ran out of time.
Well theres: USC phantom touchdown in the rosebowl which ended up being the game winner, USC fake punt hold (michigan lost because of that), "missed" field against Ohio State that would have made Michigan undefeated, Bogus PI on Desmond against MSU, the clock game against MSU, and the Notre Dame phantom touchdown which gave us our first loss of the season. That sure is a lot of mistakes.
