I feel kinda like Kurt is the "Kennedy was shot" instance for Generation X, in that you'll always remember where you were when you heard the news.

The first time I heard the opening riff to Smells Like Teen Spirit, something in me was changed forever. Nirvana got me through some very dark places in my life, and ironically, Cobain's words actually brought me out from depths where I contemplated suicide.

I was so gutted when he died, but when doing a lot of retrospective research, it's surprising he didn't kill himself much sooner.

"Isn't me, have a seed
Let me clip, dirty wings
Let me take a ride, cut yourself
Want some help, please myself
Got some rope, have been told
Promise you, have been true
Let me take a ride, cut yourself
Want some help, please myself"

Cobain wrote a few good songs with cool arrangements and catchy hooks:  Lithium, Come as You Are, Teen Spirit (although I think that was a group composition), maybe a couple of others.

Beyond that, I don't understand the idolatry at all.  Someone enlighten me.  Maybe I just need to listen more.

I do give him massive credit for almost single-handedly relegating the whole "hair metal" genre to the musical dustbin, however.

Eddie Vedder would like a word with you.

Nevermind beat Ten to market only by 3 months.  But both Ten and Nevermind have similar copies sold number otherwise.  Both US and worldwide.

Plus, Ten is a classic.  Who still doesn't crank it up to 11 when Evenflow or Alive comes on?  I still don't understand one lyric to Teen Spirit.  A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido... what the fuck is that gibberish?

I'll never forget where I was when I heard the news. It was incredibly sad and confusing day when it happened.

For the record, In Utero was a better album than Nevermind was.

I'll be honest, Foo Fighters are better and they might not have happened if not for Kurts death.  While tragic, I just said damn and moved on with my life.

Think you had to live then to know how different Nirvana was and the impact they had on a generation crying out for something other than manufactured pop music.
