Oregon State fans (silent) on keeping De Carolis

Submitted by Undefeated dre… on
When Bill Martin first announced his retirement and Brian ran down the candidates, Bob De Carolis certainly seemed like the resume winner. Former Michigan man building a good department at Oregon State. With the announcement of David Brandon as U-M's AD (something I'm fine with), I wanted to check out what the reaction would be of a relieved OSU (not that OSU) fan base. And what I find is... nothing. No posts about it on either the Rivals or Scout forums. Little mention of it on any Beaver-related (not that Beaver) blogs. In fact, no Oregon State fan seems to give a crap. I did see one thread where a fan said that only Texas Tech's AD was dumber than Oregon State's -- possibly because of crying about a 2010 OSU football schedule with non-conference opponents any Michigan fan would kill for (well, kill for if we weren't scrabbling for a bowl game): TCU, Boise State, and Louisville. In any case, thought it was odd that, among Oregon State fans, there's little mention of De Carolis being out of the running at U-M. That may be simply a reflection of the relatively small number of Beaver fans, but it makes me feel even better about Brandon. Now excuse me while I try to scroll down on this Evony ad...

Doubt 99% of fans can name their team's AD. I can only think of about 7-8 off top of my head. The head coaches are more visible figures and are more likely to elicit responses from the fanbase and blogs.

Is it possible that (not that) OSU fans don't have (most) excellent access to "happenings" via their own "Brian"? I'll be honest, if it weren't for this blog, I'd be in the dark about quite a few things that are happening @ UM. I'm guessing most of the (not that) OSU fan base wasn't even remotely aware that 'their' AD was under consideration for the AD position @ UM.

As a native Oregonian with parents in Corvallis that are big Beaver believers, my take is that you see no reaction because there was never any public indication that De Carolis was being considered. A year or two ago when the Indiana AD job was open, De Carolis interviewed for that position and there were articles in all the Oregon newspapers discussing whether or not he would get the job in Bloomington and extolling the job he had done at OSU. I have not seen that in the months since the announcement was made regarding the opening of the Michigan AD job. I read the Portland and Corvallis papers online several times a week, and there was never any coverage of the Michigan AD search. To me this means that either BDC was never interviewed, or it was done very quietly. Had there been a public announcement of his candidacy (such as OSU giving him permission to interview and reporting it to the press), I assume the coverage would have equaled what was previously done in the IU search - or even exceeded it, given his Michigan ties.

We have a superior fan base and blog network to those at (not that) OSU. Also, why would you post anything about your AD who isn't going anywhere?
