Wondering why the Viper position is not called the "Wolf" position (or "Wolfman," if you prefer) by the coaching staff.  Is there a meaningful distinction here or just an abnegation of tradition?

Apologies if this has already been discussed.

The Wolf under Bo was not a Viper LB position.  The Wolf was a rooming SS that was used mostly in run support against a plethora of option run attacks in the B1G back many years ago.  The Wolf would have been a great scheme against ND, but we stayed with the Viber LB stuff and watched Wimbush run a muck.

Because it’s Don Brown’s defense and that’s what he calls it.

A coach doesn’t get a job and say “ let’s see if I can name a position with full consideration of Michigan tradition.”

not being prickly, just a point

They are both hybrid LB/S positions. Viper emphasizes the LB aspects while the Wolf is more focused on S duties. Both Don Dufek and Randy Logan were named AA as a safety. Peppers was named AA as a LB.
