Newsome update: Good news!

Submitted by MaizeAndBlueWahoo on

No need to wait for Monday, here is the news we were hoping for:

http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/news.apx.-content-articles-RTD-2008-07-13-0145.html

From the article footnote:

Quarterback Kevin Newsome, from Western Branch High in Chesapeake, was not at the camp. He has committed to Michigan but might be wavering. Newsome's younger brother, Keevon, a rising junior defensive end, did attend.

Yippee-ki-yay!

Had a sneaky suspicion / hope that "inrich.com" at the start of that link was going to be some sort of In Rich We Trust website. Disappointment.

Newsome is solid blue; no need to worry. Some schools actually want to move him to LB because of his size (6'3" and 215 lb). I hate when these articles put in statements indicating that he might be wavering; those people don't know jack. No one can escape Rich Rod's snake oil and wizardry.

Tate Forcier vs. Kevin Newsome. From what I've read, Tate is the better passer but Kevin is the better runner/athlete. Tate has had the benefit of high school quarterback coaches so at this point, has better mechanics. Kevin doesn't have as good mechanics, but hasn't had quarterback-position coaching. I think I'd rather have Kevin because it seems he has more upside and a better athlete/fit for RR's offense. However, I really like the fact that Tate seems to WANT to be blue. Thoughts?

Fortunately it seems that Newsome is really intent on improving his passing and mechanics. If he gets some good coaching at his new school in the fall and enrolls in January, he might be up to Forcier's passing level by next fall... And be a better runner at the same time.

From what I've read, the general consensus is that Newsome has a higher ceiling (i.e. potential) than Forcier because they are at approximately the same level now but Forcier has already done more work to improve himself. Generally, most people do think Forcier is the better passer and Newsome is the better runner who needs to work on his throwing mechanic. Think of it this way, with Forcier we would resemble more of the RichRod Tulane offense while with Newsome we resemble more of the RichRod West Virginia offense. As for our chances of landing both, next to 0. We have commitments from Newsome and Beaver (who many people seem to forget but watching his tape, I like him (although he makes me wish we still had Loeffler)). We won't get a third 4 or 5 star QB commit this year. No one gets that. The depth chart is too deep then and players know that they won't have as great a chance to showcase their talents as if they go somewhere with a thinner depth chart. I'd glad that Newsome didn't go to camp, I feel a lot better about his commitment. Now, I'd really like him to make another "Michigan is the Godfather of College Football" statement again not only to make me smile but to make me feel better about him being blue. -LD3

I don't really care which we get, to be honest. Right now Newsome is in the fold and that's fine. If Tate comes too, great. Either way we have a quarterback. Forcier seems more polished, Newsome seems a bit more athletic, whatever, either one would fit fine. I'd put our odds at getting both at 1 in 10. Because Newsome's not going anywhere and Tate lists us top ten.

I thought that I had read where Newsome is reworking the mechanics of his release. Combine that with his focus on track during the spring, and its not a surprise that he was less than polished at a couple of camps this summer. What I don't understand is if Tate Forcier is so interested in us, why he did not commit right away? That allowed Beaver to take the 2nd spot. I'm not going to wager a guess as to who will be the two QBs Michigan takes or who of the three will be more successful in college, but it is nice to think that we will have two excellent QB recruits on campus 12 months from now.

Yeah I'm actually really looking forward to seeing what Feagin can do. He's gotta be a decent athlete and he's a runner. I personally think he'll be starting by the end of the year.

I'm dragging this old thread from the depths to address this Kevin Newsome thing once and for all. He's not going to VT. Here's why. http://hamptonroads.com/2008/06/hokies-want-decision-granby-linebacker

There are other links too, but I'm about five minutes from leaving work and I'm not gonna hunt them down right now. The takeaway from that is that VT has only about a dozen scholarships to give this year. In some other places I've read only 10. But think 10-12. Probably no more than that. They already have eight commits. The top two Virginia recruits are still uncommitted and looking at VT very hard; there are several other top in-state recruits they want as well; additionally they are in the hunt for people in places like Maryland. They simply have too many irons in too many fires to go after Newsome. Four, MAYBE five schollies left to give, tops. If Newsome decommits for Penn State, that's another thing. He won't be a Hokie.

As quoted by Henne for Heisman on Brian's latest post:

"I'm committed to Michigan," Newsome said. "Me and Bryce McNeal were going around bragging how we're going to beat Randall Carroll, who's going to USC, Cierre Wood, who's going to Notre Dame. We were bragging about things like that."

Newsome said he really hit it off with McNeal.

"It was great to be around a guy that's going to be a future teammate hopefully," he said. "He's a great guy. Bryce is a good, good guy. He's one of my boys now. We're going to really stay in touch."
