New Year's Day Bowl Games

Submitted by SagNasty on

Is anyone else as disappointed as I am that there is not a full slate of bowl games on New Year's day/night ? I don't understand why the NFL didn't move there games to today. They played most of their games last Saturday on Christmas Eve, why not do the same this weekend?

It just does not seem right to have to wait until January 2 to see games like the Rose Bowl.

I actually like it.  I usually see family on New Years day, so this way I get a full day of college football and get to see the family.

Completely agree with you.  But I already didn't like the bowl setup the last several years with the national championship game being played as late as January 9th and several toilet bowls being played post-January 1st.

to not have bowl games on New Years Day but I can see why there isn't.  Thankfully this is only once every seven years kind of thing.

What upsets me is how the games New Years Day (January 2 this year) have been different than what they were the previous 20 years or so.  It used to be Outback and Cotton at 11am, Gator Bowl at 12:30, and Capital/Citrus at 1pm.  and of course the Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl later on.  Now everything is changed around and the Cotton Bowl is not even on New Years day,

since these celebrations started with the Tournament of Rose Parade, and it is never held on a Sunday, due originally to not wanting to disturb the horses tied up at the churches in Pasadena.  The football game follows the parade on the same day (and originated 12 years after the parade).

Of course, now that the pattern has been set, the NFL has staked its claim to Sunday, Jan. 1.

Why must they schedule four B1G games simultaneously!? Not only simultaneously, but they also begin within 60 minutes of one another, sending my limbs into a quivering fury. And I love how every B1G opponent is a mere day trip's drive from the stadium.

what the deuce.....  I seriously didn't realize until I looked at the schedule on ESPN.com just now (prompted by this thread) that there are no bowl games tomorrow.  That's stupid.  I should be able to count on New Year's Day bowl games being on New Year's Day.  Screw the NFL, who cares.  That line-up of bowl games (the one on Monday) will be WAY better than anything the NFL has to offer.

Let's schedule 4 Big Ten bowl games on tv generally around the same time. So that Big Ten fans can't fully watch and enjoy a couple of them. Oh wait, I just checked the schedule. It looks like someone at ESPN already beat me to it. Darn it!
