Najee Chronicles Series

Submitted by Ponypie on

I can't recall seeing this series posted. It's an ongoing spotlight on Najee Harris, both a personal narrative and a focus on his recruitment, appearing in the San Fransisco Chronicle. Sixth installment came out about a week ago.

The articles reveal a humble, determined, team-oriented player who seems to have the kind of character and talent that would greatly add to the Harbaugh-itocricy. OK, that's a serious understatement.

Maybe even better, a commitment would be a beautiful poke in the Alabama eye.

Come on down, Mr. Harris.

Part of the 'recruiting' chapter that I nearly laughed out loud at when reading:

"Alabama assistant coach Tosh Lupoi probably didn’t find this entertaining. Lupoi, a De La Salle-Concord alum who played at Cal and worked in the Pac-12 for six years, is an acclaimed recruiter who covers the West Coast for the Crimson Tide. He called Harris after Harbaugh’s visit and belittled Michigan’s schedule in the Big Ten, comparing it with the rugged road Alabama must navigate in the Southeastern Conference."

We're the only team in the country that's beaten 3 top ten teams in the CFP. Also, the B1G is responsible for 4 of the top 8 teams in the country. The Bama leader recruiter is spewing out a bunch of bullshit to top recruits, worried that they're going to come to UM.

By the way, guys, I've got this buddy--he's a Macedonian prince, and he's just come into A HUGE SUM OF MONEY! But, due to Macedonia's arcane tax laws, he needs to pay an inheritance fee before he can access the funds. It's only like, $5000! And he's promised to generously reward anyone who helps him out. It's a crazy return on your investment, yo! Just send whatever amount you can contribute to me, Clarence Boddicker, and we can help a fella out and get paid!

Yep...there's a certain mentality in sports (and other competitive arenas) where the talk is just part of the game. MJ was a great example..he talked it and there was nothing the opponent could do. Its basically a way of challenging yourself to be on top and dominate more than anything else.

That being said...knocking UMs schedule isn't were I would go as Bama. If there are going to go there then they are going about it all wrong.

While I agree that they have played soft schedules, you cannot play this game without saying who you think belongs in the top ten instead of them.

It is frighteningly hard.  Everyone has flaws.  No one has beaten anyone.  Which makes sense because the top teams have so few losses. Only 13 overall losses in the top ten:

  • 7 against other top ten teams
  • 2 against USC (ranked #13)
  • 4 against unranked teams (Pitt twice, Houston, and Iowa :( )

Teams I think are better than both and would win on a neutral field include Bama, Clemson, Michigan, OSU, Louisville, Washington, USC, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Auburn, LSU and that is mostly off the top of my head. Obviously some of that is speculation but Colorado's best win is what, 10-5 over stanford? 20-10 over ucla? Their most impressive performance might just be losing closely to USC.

Penn State has a good but admittedly pretty fluky win over osu and outside of that has a loss to pitt, a 3 point win over minnesota, a close win over temple, etc. They are playing better now than at the end of the year but I still don't buy they are actually that good of a team.

"But he chose to stay at Antioch, in part because of a strong bond with his teammates. 'He said he liked the underdog and wanted to make this program better,' said Lucido, the head coach." Hopefully he enjoys his OV.

One person he is comfortable talking to, and about, is Harbaugh. Harris describes his interactions with the often intense, khaki-clad coach as if he’s found a kindred spirit, the rare coach willing to engage in banter with recruits. That’s a major contrast to a coach such as Alabama’s Nick Saban, whom Harris characterizes as “straight business” and “very strict.” Even if Harris doesn’t end up in Ann Arbor, he’s become a Harbaugh fan. “He’s dope,” Harris says. “Everybody thinks he’s weird, but he’s not weird. I like him a lot. He’s a funny dude. He’s cool.”

Don't get too excited...don't get too excited..don

Fuck. I swear that's never happened before

Michigan needs these kind of athletes if they are going to close the gap with OSU. Hopefully Harbaugh can win more of these battles than he loses.

Buckeyes always seem to have one, and even state has been getting some really good ones. It just feels like if we hit on Harris, it will probably set the tone for future rb recruits.
