MSU did make tourney last year, it's dumb to say otherwise. It's First Four, not "play-in".
The NCAA explicitly says so on their website.

Bad as their run has been the last 10 games or so, they will likely still get into the tourney. Depending on their first round matchup they could be a first round bounce out.
I kind of enjoy watching Sparty fail but it's not called the "play in game" it's called The First Four and is part of the tournament.
