Most proud moment as a Wolverine?

Submitted by Noleverine on

It's been a slow couple of news days aside from the BBQ and Wormley committing (glad you finally chose the good guys), so I decided to raise a question to the board: what is your most proud moment being associated with the University of Michigan?

My time of being associated with UM has been filled with an enormous amount of pride.  Every time I see the block M, whether on a t-shirt, a campus building, or anywhere else, I can feel the pride swell within me.  Even despite how things have gone recently in football, I still take every opportunity I have to talk about Michigan-- football, basketball, and general scholastic endeavors.  Whenever I do speak of UM, I do so with a smile and a sparkle in my eye, as I am speaking about the greatest University in the world.

For me, the most proud moment had to be when I got accepted to Michigan.  I grew up in NY, but had always loved UM.  It had always existed as an ideal for me, but one I did not think was reasonably attainable.  My brother was a law student at UM, and he talked me in to applying (I was reluctant to waste the application fee only to not get in).  I was on campus visiting him and the school, when I got a call from the University saying I was accepted.  I was all alone in his apartment, so I was forced to dance and laugh maniacally to myself (the neighbors must have been concerned).

When I returned home, I was brimming with excitement.  I had made my decision as soon as the admissions counselor told me I was accepted, and made a point to share my joy with everyone.  The most common response I received was "Michigan?!?!? AWESOME!!." Being from a small town in NY, most people from my HS went to SUNY schools.  Our valedictorian even went to a SUNY school (nothing against them, but in a town like mine it's hard to leave).   So when people started making their decisions, college t-shirts started to become a part of every senior's wardrobe.  I wore the maize and blue daily, counting down the hours until I could get on campus.  And every time someone saw me with the block M, I could see that they understood why I walked around with my head held high and the biggest smile on my face, ever.

So, I will reiterate my question: what is your most proud moment?

Man, so many things could go down here.  Certainly getting the fat letter back in high school rates pretty high.  I never thought about going anywhere else, and didn't waste the application fees on any other schools.  It was Michigan from day one, and there was no backup plan.

As a fan, probably two years ago when we beat ND at the Big House.  I was on the ND campus at the time as a grad student there, and watched the game in my apartment, bouncing off the walls like a maniac.  After the game was over, I started running around the campus in my Charles Woodson jersey.  I came across the fountain they used to run through back when they won big games, and gave it a little run-through myself.  Ran into a friend who is a Boston College fan (decked out in all his BC gear), and we walked around campus for an hour or two like jackasses.

In the end, though, there's just no way to distill it into a single moment.  It's a life-long thing, highlighted by 4 great years on campus.  There's just nothing better on this planet.

Well, mine pales in comparison...

I joined the army right out of high school, in 96. I was able to come home over new years of 98, and watched the Rose Bowl with my dad. It was the last game we saw together,  as I wasnt able to make it home often for a while, and he died not long after.

Not only did UM win the title (f*ck Nebraska), it was something I got to watch with my dad.

I had an amazing time when I was a student at UM, but my proudest moments as a Wolverine were attending the UM graduations of two children.

Talk about having a lump in your throat!

Without a doubt so far it has been getting online on October 22, 2009 to see that email. I still have the email in my inbox even though its almost 3 years old now. Funny thing is they sent me the same admissions email in May after I transferred from Engineering to LSA. So now I have two UM admissions letters, hoping to make it 3 for grad school although I have some work to do if I want that to happen.

Fan wise it has to be either Brock walking last year or leaving the stadium to the chorus of, "Its great to be a Michigan Wolverine" after Illinois. I

February 16, 2011. Woke up, rolled out of bed before class to do the usual (Check Facebook e-mail, etc.). Saw the headline: University of Michigan Admission Decision. Nearly shit. First words I saw were "Congratulations-You're In". One of the best days of my life. I'm a transfer student, so I couldn't yell too loud and wake up my roommate. After being rejected in high school my senior year, being accepted was one of the best feelings ever for a lifelong Michigan fan. In only 3 more years I'll be the first person in my immediate family with a college degree. Proud to be a Wolverine.
