My personal order would be:

1. Minter (obviously)

2. Walters (basically recreated Michigan's defense with far less talent)

3. Garrett Riley (incredible QB development despite losing their starter early)

4. Alex Golesh (runs Ohio State's offense but wearing orange)

5. Todd Monken (even Georgia fans think he's just benefitting from a roster full of studs)

No he's not, and he doesn't run the "amoeba" per se, but functionally, his defense is built very similarly.  3 tackles or interior linemen to form the run wall, 2 stand up edges to build hard edges,  and 2 linebackers for essentially a 5-2 front that stops the run (this is much like us).  The backend, they rely more on man-to-man and aggressive blitzing, more so than we do.  But like us, they mix up their formations a bit will alternate between sending 6 at the QB vs dropping 8 into coverage so you can't be sure what you're gonna get.

It's just a very sound, stout up front defense that expertly mixes up their calls with Illinois caliber players (besides Devon Witherspoon who is very legit and very good)

Walters is awesome but the Big 10 West is full of bad offenses.  Best offense he faced was ours, and we used half our starters and half our playbook.  Were on our way to 30+ before Corum went down.  2nd best was ... Purdue?  And they gave up 31.

Just nothing on the schedule close to having to go to OSU when they've been gameplanning all year to light you up and couldn't do it

Edit: Meant to mention, I know their recruits aren't as highly rated overall, though the corners are NFL level ... I just think there's an argument between Minter and Walters

It will probably come down to Minter, Golesh, and Riley, with this weekend playing a big role in how Minter and Riley are viewed. If we totally shut down Purdue you have to think Minter locks it up. That said there’s been so much media love for Tenn this year that I could see it going to Golesh.

Just checked the recent winners. They gave it to Clemson coaches back-to-back in 2016/2017 and Bama coaches 2/3 years in 2018/2020.

Doesn't seem like Gattis winning last year would negatively affect Minter's chances - in case anyone else thought that might.

Harbaugh deserves at least partially credit here, though.

He's the guy who decided to bring over his brother's system, and losing a DC after only one year he said "nope, this is the one we're sticking with exactly this."

How does Minter's contract stack up with other top Defensive coaches?  I hope Harbaugh/Warde pay him above going rate as keeping him here for a long stretch would be terrific.

when you are up against the #2 scoring offense in the nation at their stadium and only give up 3 points in the second half en route to a blowout.

And that was the norm pretty much the entire season:

You should probably win the Broyles award.

Going to be awesome to see Harbaugh up for national coach of the year awards again. Minter up for the Broyles. Michigan will win the Joe Moore award again. It's time for everyone around the country to take notice. Except teams looking to hire new coaches. Stay the hell away from ours.

Riely and Golesh are assistants where the head coach does their work.  Minter is easily the most deserving on this list, but if I had to bet on one, it would probably be Riley since offense rules the day.

Then again, Minter rules the Day.
