Mike Martin stock rising

Submitted by rockediny on

I was watching clip about the Senior Bowl on BTN and Mike Martin was just mentioned as someone who was unheralded coming in but whose stock is rising.

One question though: Would Martin really be described as "unheralded"?

Other notes: Mike Adams is good, Alfonso Dennard's stock is dropping because of footwork, and Russel Wilson may go undrafted because of his height (things do not look good for Denard at QB).

is that he was so woefully physically underdeveloped coming out of college that scouts missed on his potential. once he got to the NFL he's shown elite measurables: 6' 4", built to weather hits, a powerful arm and great feet in the pocket.

he was an exception since most players coming out of college (especially nowadays) are close to their physical ceiling.

martin's speed, motor, and just pure brute strength will make up for his height. depending on how well he performs at the combine, i could see him going 3rd, maybe even 2nd round.

I told him that if he didn't go in the first round, I would be furious. He laughed and said he loved me. Context helps; we were both wasted in New Orleans (okay, I'm not sure if he was, but I definitely was), and it was one of the greatest moments of my life. One of my favorite Michigan players, and one of the best D linemen especially during my time in undergrad, said he loved me. I swooned.

So I'm predicting 1st round. Otherwise I owe him a beer or something.

I get it -- success like Martin's in the B1G doesn't guarantee him anything at the NFL level -- where folks are bigger, faster, and more disciplined.  That being said, the dude has a huge heart, and an uncanny knack for making the big play.  He might not be prototypical, but I have to believe savvy GM's have their eye on this guy in the early rounds.  My guess is he goes 2nd or 3rd round for sure.

Hate to ever give accolades to anything ohio, but I remember folks razzing the Lions for going after Spielman since he wasn't the prototypical linebacker at the time.  How'd that work out?

Roundtree retweeted a message from Todd McShay raving about Martin. He'll be an excellent value pick in the mid rounds.

worst case, he's the Mike Hart of defensive players and starts coaching in a few seasons.
