Michigan/OSU highlights, Karsch and Jansen radio call

I know I'm not the only one who's been keeping an eye open for this.

THANK YOU! Was hoping to get to listen to this, been looking every day since The Game.

Nothing better than Jansen giggling with joy like a kid on Edward's 2 long TD's
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:37 PM ^
Oh excellent, thanks!
There's a video with the OSU radio call up on YouTube too, which is honestly pretty great. Both of their broadcasters have wonderful radio voices, and it's always good to have a little schadenfreude in your life.

If I'm not mistaken, Mgrowold spoke highly of them, and I watched a fair amount of that and I have to agree. Excellent. I appreciate opposition announcers that are good. I'm ok with them focusing on their own team--I expect it--but I appreciate it when they're fair. Those guys seemed eminently fair.
Minnesota has hockey announcers that are the same. I enjoy their radio calls of Michigan games.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:18 PM ^
worth a listen - they were both really professional and had great radio demeanor/presence (imho). They called a good game.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:04 PM ^
OSU wins the battle of announcers by as much as Michigan won the game.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:20 PM ^
Paul Keels has been at this for a long time. Him and Eli Gold (Alabama) are two of the best out there.
December 2nd, 2022 at 3:07 PM ^
OSU radio announcer is best in the biz rn imo.
His tone and voice are made for radio. His calls of on field action are on time and accurate. He's at the top of his game, no doubt.
December 2nd, 2022 at 3:26 PM ^
You got that shit right. Paul Keels is about as good as they come on radio. Football/Basketball college or pro.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:41 PM ^
enjoyed the hell out of this.....
also reminded how glad I am that Brando and Dierdorf retired.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:43 PM ^
Yeah. Love the two of them for their lifelong dedication to our beloved team... but Brando was absolutely terrible as PbP.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:57 PM ^
Yeah, I always thought it was a huge bummer that they didn't keep Brando on as color commentary, and find someone new to do play-by-play. Brando has such a great voice, and having his infections enthusiasm be a part of last season's run was such a huge part of the magic of last season- but yeah, he was pretty limited in terms of his actual skill at play-by-play.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:51 PM ^
Yeah, Brandy was not a great PBP guy. But the sheer emotion in his call at the end of the OSU game last year was fantastic. He and Dierdorf were experiencing every feeling we all were having. Unforgettable.
They may have been goofballs but they were OUR goofballs.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:32 PM ^
I generally agree. They left much to be desired in regards to basic game information, especially during a play.
However, this video from last year's game (their call voiced over the game broadcast) was special due to the emotion and the deep desire to win.
December 2nd, 2022 at 3:41 PM ^
brando is terrible on pxp and dan is just terrible..... how he has been on broadcast crews for so many years is astounding....
"we should never, ever, speculate on the severity of an injury, but the way that looked, he's going to be out for a long time" is one of a million dierdorfs from over the years.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:41 PM ^
Not the strongest radio play-by-play voice.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:44 PM ^
I'm waiting to see if he grows on me.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:44 PM ^
May be the minority here, but Karsch is equivalent to nails on a chalkboard to me. I just don't enjoy his voice.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:18 PM ^
Donovan Edwards has an NFL career ahead of him but man could he have a future in radio & TV after his playing days are over with the voice he has
December 2nd, 2022 at 3:09 PM ^
OSU radio pbp announcer has the best voice in the biz rn imo.
Karsch is ok, but the difference in quality is obvious.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:55 PM ^
I have been wondering why Michigan couldn’t find a play by play guy without a vocal cord disorder. You can hardly hear him when he gets excited - which is most of the time.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:56 PM ^
Not to thread-jack, but I just ran across this absolutely peak Harbaugh quote and wanted to share it on the eve of the BTCG. Never go peak Harbaugh? I beg to disagree.
"It can be a great temptation to rest on the field and let the opponent have a play without making him pay for every inch. I must hold his pain where it is. Mine does not matter. ... The punishment I inflict, his fatigue, and that he is up against something that he does not comprehend is everything."
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:46 PM ^
Wow, where is this from? It’s like Harbaugh on a Nietzsche bender.
December 2nd, 2022 at 3:00 PM ^
article about that (and other things) from 2014:
https://grantland.com/the-triangle/dear-jim-harbaugh-just-go-to-michigan
(it does feel like some of it is from old literature, like "The Old Man and the Sea")

I was bummed by the an Osu radio call as I wanted those guys to be total homers and just lose their minds over the results of the game. But they were super professional and they both had great voices. Karsch and Jansen are homers. Loved the contrast and will echo that Karsch’s voice leaves a lot to be desired.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:50 PM ^
Jansen's laugh is almost sinister on multiple plays..... You can tell he knows what is happening we are kicking their ass.... God bless him and Karsch!
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:58 PM ^
That's the first time I've listened to Karsch. He's not bad.
December 2nd, 2022 at 3:10 PM ^
Last time I heard Karsch sign off his radio show he simply said “Treat people with respect”. Stand up guy.
December 2nd, 2022 at 3:33 PM ^
I don't think we truly appreciated how great Frank Beckmann was.
December 2nd, 2022 at 6:35 PM ^
Always liked Frank. He was good but I’m glad we are entering the youth movement with Karsch and Jansen.
December 2nd, 2022 at 4:02 PM ^
That was enjoyable, but I will say I stumbled upon the highlights with the local Ohio broadcast and their broadcaster was great. Much better than Karsch.
December 2nd, 2022 at 6:32 PM ^
Karsch is good and has good rapport as a sideline guy/reporter. His play-by-play for The Game was pretty darn good. Having said that, I would LOVE to have Devin Gardner in the booth. I don’t care his role but get his voice, knowledge, timing, humor, game experience, etc. on the radio. I know he's currently doing games for Fox but for those who haven’t heard him lately search YouTube for his “Monday Morning Quarterback with Devin Gardner” on WTKA. Crazy good this whole season and includes Sam Webb.
Go Blue beat Purdue!
December 3rd, 2022 at 2:57 PM ^
Devin Gardner would be great as the radio man, but he is going national. His charisma and face are made for tv
December 2nd, 2022 at 11:36 PM ^
Thanks for posting. That was cool to hear those dudes.

The Varsity Network radio app is great for college games. They have live radio feeds and, afterwards, on demand radio of The Game (and tons of other college sports from many universities). It’s one of my favorite apps.
