Michigan lacrosse 50th anniversary honored

Submitted by Old Lax Wolve on

The Michigan men’s lacrosse Team Four honored the proud club team history by wearing commemorative uniform patches for Sunday’s game versus Ohio State, and in a brief but meaningful ceremony paid tribute to the founding of the club lacrosse team in 1965. Transcript follows:

“Ladies and gentlemen at this time the University of Michigan athletic department would like to recognize the men that laid the foundation for Michigan lacrosse as we know it today. We honor Bob Gillon, Bill Moller, Bob DiGiovanni, and Bill Fleischman. In 1965 these four students took it upon themselves to start a lacrosse team, and 50 years later that team has evolved into an athletic department varsity sport and competing member of the Big Ten. On the field today representing those four men is Bob DiGiovanni, one of the founding members of that 1965 team. Mr. DiGiovanni was a leader of the program for 33 years as a player and a coach. Mr. DiGiovanni please accept this plaque as a sign of our gratitude and appreciation for laying the foundation for our lacrosse program here at Michigan.”

As a club team alum I love this.  JP and the athletic department are clearly building the varsity program (Team Four and all that), but they are also making a real effort to honor the past.  It's smart.  The club alums are the donors and job network for the current players.  The guys from my era had a lot of fun and made great friends playing, and the guys from the last few club teams have a lot of pride in the championships they won.  And in Michigan's case, which is kind of unique in lacrosse, the D1 program came about in large part because of the way the club team was built.

Yes I agree, I'm glad they acknowledged and recongnized the history of the club program.  Its smart to keep the alums and former club guys plugged into program and to make them feel like they're a part of it.

In other news, Hopkins needed 2 overtimes to take down a struggling Penn St team.  Penn St and Hopkins are probably as weak as they will ever be and Michigan needs to pick off one of these games.  Maybe they can do it this Saturday in Baltimore!

Yeah - thats a discouraging trend.  JP always had good faceoff guys, so its weird that they're struggling to win FOs.

Two years ago Hopkins had a dude who was unreal and I think Michigan won like 2 the whole game.   But they were much better last year because the Hopkins dude was gone.  So thats good, I guess?

But, if the D is struggling, which it appears to be, a great FO man is a freaking god-send.  They need to get it together for these last 2 games.
