Michigan Hockey schedule announced (now with times & (lack of) TV)

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The first exhibition game of the 2017-18 season and first look at Mel Pearson's Wolverines is just two days away.

The B1G finalized TV this week. Michigan has a whopping 12 games on TV. 3 of the 4 Michigan-MSU aren't even televised as of right now.

Press release says more games can and will be added. I happen to think the B1G as a league stinks and killed college hockey. FSD has lost a lot of interest in doing games since the CCHA died.

Unless you have BTN+ ($9.95 a month), you won't see too many regular season games.

BTN+ schedule isn't officially released yet but given every home game and B1G game last year that wasn't on regular TV was on BTN+, I'm just gonna pencil them in here.

Some notes-

  • ND obviously isn't a full member B1G school. I have no idea if they're going to get a BTN Student U production given to them like the other full member schools have. So no idea how those games are going be covered. They didn't have a deal with NBCSN for ND. It was a deal with Hockey East iirc.
  • US NTDP has a TV deal with Comcast channel 900 in SE MI.
  • The first two games to open the season are on free online streams. The Clarkson game is going to be going on during Football's game fyi.
  • Ferris State series is a Thursday-Friday due to Football homecoming on 10/28
  • Football/Hockey doubleheaders the last two weeks of the Football regular season. Football and Hockey both play at Wisconsin on 11/18 and Football and Hockey both host OSU on 11/25.
  • First series vs state in December will be a Thursday-Friday set up. Because reasons....?
  • Michigan's B1G bye is the final week of the regular season.
  • The B1G Tournament is entirely on campuses.
  • NCAA Regional sites are in Bridgeport, CT (East), Worcester, MA (NE), Allentown, PA (Midwest) and West (Sioux Falls, SD)
  • Frozen Four is in Saint Paul. The same venue that Michigan played in the last time Mel was behind the bench here back in 2011. This time we'll win.

Based on what?

We have two of the nation's top-5 freshmen on our team. One of them is a First Rounder. Michigan will be just a tournament team at the very worst this season.

Program has changed. The culture is changing. Mel is still working on things. On his interview on WTKA earlier this week with Spath, he said the coaches are going to get rid of the "save your energy for the game" mentality the team previously had as an excuse not to work hard in practice (paraphrasing).

Last year wouldn't have been the disaster it was if Mel was here.

Work all due respect WD, it’s impossible to tell what this season will hold. We could come out like hang busters and win it all. I was there in St Paul in 2011, 10 rows off the ice, and I promise you I’ll be back if we manage to make the FF again.

However, to assume Mel will instantly turn us back into a dominant program is a bit much. I liken it to learning a new system in football, it will take some time. If we make the tourney this year, I’ll be happy. Once we get there, it’s always a crapshoot.

Maybe not WD-optimistic, but I feel pretty good. The delta between coaching engagement this year over last is high, and that means a lot in hockey. M has talent, and while some is pretty young, those kids can have early impact in hockey. They will be harder on the puck and a much better possession team this year.

IIRC even in the CCHA days we would only get M-MSU games on FSD regularly. A lot of other ones were on Comcast 9000 or FSD+ or CBS College Sports. I remember that huge M-Miami series back in 08(?) where it was like a 1-2 match-up and I had to try to locate CBS College Sports to catch the games

BTN+ at least gives foiks outside of southeast Michigan a chance to watch the games for a little money. I remember moving out of state, I used to hopelessly search for streams online for M games or pay for super extra cable to get random FS channels on the east coast

I won't disagree that the Big Ten killed a lot of the fun in midwest hockey

Does the BTN still do that thing where they don't even send announcers to the rink? It's the weirdest thing watching a game and knowing the person calling it isn't even in the same timezone.

For that matter, I miss the days of going to Yost and knowing more often than not the game wasn't on TV, so you weren't going to be sitting there for endless TV timeouts that sapped every ounce of energy out of the place.

the B1G stinks and killed college hockey. You have traditional powers of Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin in this league and now PSU has quickly become a stalwart in college hockey. Maybe some programs have been down a little but the conference also has the ability to one of the best in college hockey. Notre Dame now joining just strengthens the conference.

Big Ten hockey is going to be awesome when Mich, MSU, Wis, Min, PSU, and ND are all good again. I don’t know what you’re talking about.
